Without me knowing, a mate of mine took a vid of me surfing last Saturday in some very small stuff.

It was from a 100 meters away, so not much happened, but it did settle one thing in my mind in relation to wave priority.

My take on the 3 basic rules of etiquette are:

1. Closest the curl has priority

2. First to their feet, and still reasonably close to the curl, has priority (regardless of if you want to surf it out on the shoulder or under the lip)

3. Snaking is getting on board the wave deep on the inside, or even in the white wash, after it's already taken, then surfing out towards the shoulder to claim the wave from its rightful owner.

On my big volume board, I can often pick up the swell sooner and get onto my feet ahead of others. But I still find others on my inside and I often wonder if I really did get up first.

The vid of Saturday was very conclusive, I was snaked.

It didn't matter because the surf was not worth worrying about, but there have been times when it does matter.

Now for my query, there was a 666 there, way way out on the shoulder, he didn't figure into the equation, but what if he did?

They're always on their feet, so that means one of the rules of etiquette does not apply to them!

Or does it?

When 666s were relatively new i found most of them( often longboarders) were pretty fair dinkum about their advantage and taking turns for waves... but as the the numbers grew and even the good blokes became more aggressive/competitive for waves good manners went south. IMO they don't count anymore unless contact is imminent.

Rule/Point #1 carries the most weight, loosely followed by point #2... however, a drop in is a drop in if point #1 is in play (obviously the person on 'the inside' needs to be making a genuine endevour to catch the wave, otherwise it's up for grabs IMO).

would always normally agree with rule # 1... until

one day sitting on a point about 4 of us waiting patiently for a wave...

this guy just comes out paddles around the corner of the point and politely sits himself on the inside of everyone ... everyone who had been there waiting.

a wave comes and this new guy starts paddling...closest to the curl... another guy that had been out waiting also paddles for the wave within a foot inside of the other guy... and takes the wave...drops in and takes it.. and so he should have.

lesson wait your turn i guess :)

What if you ride on your knees?

Not being a dick, but after a dopey cow took my knee out I can't always pop up, so I ride on my knees. On a 9'6" mal somedays.

As I told several that considered their entitlement to the waves to be greater than mine, "I'll f**kin run over you!" Fading is also not one of my favourite experiences.

If someone is deeper, already riding, then it's their wave, regardless of how they ride, or what they are riding. Same goes for the surfer who gets crowded in front of when he's coming down the peak.

THIS,

i believe in closest to the curl gets priority but if some wank paddles out and positions himself on the inside and thinks he has the right when everyone else has been waiting patiently, thats a big no no. I give people the wave if they have been waiting longer than me for a wave

if im on it i have right of way, if for any reason i can convince myself it should be mine, i am on it and therfore have right of way.

but i hate people who dont share...

Seriously, if theres not many out, take a number and wait your turn, if its crowded and a zoo, than see above.. but never drop in.... unless old mate has just snaked up the inside or jumped of the rocks and gone to the inside, then it is ok.
As for snaking, you should know if its your turn. but if someone is doing it to you then what do you do? of course get the forked tongue out and ssssssnake...

i reckon its a case of treat others as they behave, if everyone is happy and sharing no problem but if your hassling then youve got to expect it back.

Assuming you paddle prone then rise to your knees, then that's your equivalent of getting to your feet, case closed, you have all the right of way claims as anyone else.

But even if you knee paddle, once you stop paddling and start ripping, IMHO, the wave is still yours.

Between me and my two mates (3 man wolf pack) we are guilty of breaking one of the 3 basic laws each and pull each other up on it all the time. We dont really do it to strangers but to each other which is actually more annoying when the surf is good!

I have a tendancy to drop in on mates as a laugh claiming "Party Wave" except I sometimes take it too far and need to be told. Another mate who rides a shortboard is chronic for snaking, sits closer in and on your outside, when a set swings in he guns it for your inside and just decides he will go, once again after a couple of times of this we tell him in no uncertain fashion.

The third member of the wolf pack's habit is getting a wave then paddling up your inside out the back straight away and grabbing the next wave when you have been waiting your turn. Its funny that each of us has bad habits but we usuall set each other straight and a lot of it comes down to communication.

"Dont snake me or Im just gonna drop in", "Piss off, dont drop in I'm going!" and "Dont even think about paddling up the inside, wait your turn mate!"

Ha ha I laugh about it when I think about it

Had a nice surf earlier in the week on a 6'6 In clean 3 ft with 5 other older blokes. Everythings all chatty and polite and everyone getting their share.

Got raided by a pack of groms and the other blokes bailed and left me with them. Was OK at first but the first time I crashed they were all over me and I wasn't going to get another wave.

I wasn't quite ready to call it a day so I thought blow this and went and changed to the trusty 8'6, The beatup heavy bloody thing that it is. I sat 20m further out and took off on the first nice one to come along. The way it peeled off meant that I went blasting through their huddle like a train and took it all the way to the beach. When I paddled back out past them I kinda expected a bit of abuse. Instead they actually apologised for getting in the way. Nice kids. I went down the beach a bit after that and gave them a bit of space.

Some days its really nice to have the control of a break a longboard can give although I think its very important not to abuse that power.

EDIT. How is it nubile teenage girls can surf in tiny bikinis. Everytime I surf with no top I get the board rash from hell

wait you're turn ,or if someone has not got onto one if you're quick enough to turn the board around, go for it.

Yes, as mentioned you also need to wait for your turn. There's an etiquette list floating around the web, and I first saw it as a plaque at Margaret River, and essentially (from memory), "waiting longest" actually takes priority.

I think Rule 1 was - Waiting longest or closest to the curl.
Unfortunately quite a few people don't care for "waiting longest".
However I will occasionally tell someone that they have had plenty of waves, and that they should let some waves go for people who have been waiting longer.

We even did this to a guy at Cokes (Maldives) one morning. We had the place to ourselves for the early, and 1 guy paddles out and makes a nuisance of himself, paddling for everything, snaking, sprint paddling left or right to quickly jostle for position / priority. We all told him to relax, hold his position in the line-up, and wait his turn. And things went quite well after that.
