Howdy all,

I have been riding my midlength a fair bit recently - 8 x 22 x 2 7/8 NPJ Sweet Pea.

However I took a log out on Sunday when I would of normally chosen the midlength or fish. Long story short - I had an absolute ball on it.... All the short boarders were struggling yet I was getting wave after wave whilst still riding the board how a log should be ridden (i.e. mostly shuffling up to a nose ride attempt, coming a good 2 foot short then falling off ).

Anyway- this got me thinking, maybe (maybe.....) I should look into purchasing a single fin log with some HP elements... I am personally not a fan of HP longboarding (trying to replicate a short board style surfing) however the conditions that I would use the midlength in would be identical to a more refined longboard... And in reality I am trying to surf the midlength like a shortboard so it kind of becomes what I hate about HP longboarding anyway....

I was thinking along the lines of something like these:

www.creativearmy.com.au/longboards.html Jive or 5 sugars

www.mctavish.com.au/surfboard/thedirtnap in the longer length

http://www.boardcave.com.au/surf-brand/noosa-longboards/longboard-malibu/joker/

I would love to hear some peoples thoughts on replacing the midlength with a more HP style single fin (Not keen on a 2+1 fin set up either).

I have sold a bunch of boards recently and am cashed up at the moment with that cash burning a hole in my pocket.. Haha

So many good long board shapers, so I won't comment on who I'd recommend. It would be like 4 different board makers anyway, so may as well go with whats convenient for you...What I will say though & I was talking to a mate the other day about this. After riding a 9'1, then a 9'4 & now a 10'0. I wouldn't go back coz the extra inches just like you found make a big difference in glide which is so helpful in tiny conditions, but doesn't really effect other stuff unless your trying to surf like a SB like you said (totally agree). May as well have fun trimming & trying to work out how to get to the nose without nose diving or falling off...& then getting back again

I should probably clarify this some more...

For small clean waves I have a traditional log that I love to death and will never sell. EVER! 10 foot pig, big glass on D fin - a real beauty.

For the high tide, fatter waves, say chest-head & 1/2 I would normally use the midlength.

On the sucky days I use a quad egg style board

And then I throw in a fish for some variety randomly throughout all of the above conditions.

So in short:

1-2 foot - log
2-4+ foot fat - Midlength
2 - 4 + Sucky - Quad Egg
Random - Fish

I guess what I am trying to garner opinions on is the worth of a midlength at all - should I just brush the NPJ and get a more performance orientated longboard in the high 9 foot range. 9'10" ish.

Mac - cheers for the advice on the DirtNap, what McTavish would you recommend? The Fireball? Pinnacle?? The board that Ray Gleave rides in that mini movie is nice, if I can surf like that it may persuade me to buy a McTavish

i dont think you need a new board at all since you have all bases covered imo....a new board is always good though.

on a hp type of allround board,or a pure hp longboard. Unless you ride them as anything but a single you are wasting your time, again imo.

i have what is one of the best hp longboardss around, heavily rockered, thin in the nose and tail and pulled in nose. i loved that board so much when all i was riding was longboards. now my midlenghth blows it away in all respects of what they can both do.. Except i cant use my mid in comps. I took my hp out yesterday for the first time in a while, and i could not believe how slow it was and hard to turn compared to the mid....once again great for longboard comps.

By the way my quiver is very similar to yours....except i might have a few more randoms floating around. I have every condition sorted with them.

i encourage you to buy a new board though

I'd say grab a more performance orientated LB for something different & keep the mid length for the same reason.

Haha thanks for the input ads - from the sounds of it I should keep the midlength and buy a performance longboard...

I might have to think this over a little more...

A new board is always a good time...

You are all talking too much sense - I am tending to agree with you all.... New boards for everyone

I think I will keep the mid and grab a longboard with some performance orientated designs (Sorry to bulk some of the advice, I just cant pull the trigger on a 2+1 set up).

I have whittled it down to either of these as the main contenders.

Bing Pintail Lightweight - bingsurf.com/collections/pintail-lightweight

Creative Army Jive - www.creativearmy.com.au/longboards.html

Both should come in about the same price, the Bing will take a tad longer to arrive though...

i would bar the 2+1 idea and go straight for a thruster or quad set up...im actually liking quads on the longer boards atm

Mad talk - 2+1 is where it's at.

Or get a fin box and four plugs so you can have whatever set up you want and be really confused.

Have used quad fins in longboard for a few years now - in the juice they are amazing - so much grip and drive when it is steep they literally feel like they are on rails and sooooo smooth, hated it when the waves were fat or should I say that I struggled when there was no juice.

Have seen some pros do everything on the quads - but they are pros that could nose ride a door.

IMHO opinion 2 + 1 works in everything and lets you go single fin with a different fin if you want to mix it up a bit.

End of the day you are not going to get one board or fin set up that does everything, you will get some set ups that can manage different waves but you will always be in between - just buy one of every option!!
