Had a weekend that involved injury, dejection and salvation. The injury and dejecture were caused by a little bit of groundswell but no banks on a metro beachie which led to a nasty little bump on my head and a little bit of damage to my board, dejection followed as paddling for closeouts wore me down mentally and physically.(why do I persist with it??)
Salvation was followed the next day with a really fun little interclub contest with the longboarding club I have recently joined. Great group of guys, organized event, fun but messy waves (was just glad to see a little bit of shape!) and a lot of feedback and things learnt. Contest was not as stressful as I thought. Just surf for half an hour and enjoy yourself with a group of guys and see how you went when you get to the beach. Followed by a free surf at a spot I hadnt really surfed before (which I will now try to get to when ever I can )
Great stuff keep us up to date with all the happenings Souwester So you didn't take all the prizes home on your first comp with the new club Just as well, they would have drug tested ya
Ha ha no win, no prizes Mac. I actually didnt even drink the night before so I would be fresh. There are a few really good longboarders at the club so looking to learn a bit. I think the most I scored was a 4.5? My mate who joined same time got a good ride and scored a 7 which was awesome. I didnt actually see it but must have been a good one.
Hopefully Autumn kicks in soon (offshore/ good swell/good tides) Im over Summer waves (southerly/no swell/low tides). Actually I think I am over Summer in general what with the crowds, the extreme heat and lack of surf. Autumn and Spring are where its at!
One thing I noticed in the contest format was the adrenalin that kicks in just because its a contest, not aggro adrenelin but I found myself paddling harder and bieng more switched on than a normal free surf. Was really good fun and cant wait for the next club meet.
Hahaha, I dont need anyone to do it to me, I get smashed before comps all the time, suffer so bad for it, but have a great time anyway. Trying this year to keep my excitment under wraps untill Saturday night, did ok in my last comp, two personal bests in both heats.
Comps are great for lifting your surfing, they make you do things that you wouldnt normally do.
good to hear,i also joined a club 6 years ago ,talked a lot of **** on the day laughed at other peoples wipeouts which at times were quite nasty and had a drink or two at the end of the comp at the bbq.you do learn a lot from the guys who go in state titles etc and also get feedback from the different boards they ride. This year i am having the year off from club to get away camping.
Yeah it adds another dimension to your surfing. Im not massively competitive with my surfing just pure enjoyment thats why I longboard I guess, it does wonders to see how others ride up close (not just on a video) especially if they rip.
Woke up and drove to the beach at 4 am yep up to Noosa 3 hours in driving rain, the wife thinks i need to check into some rehab unit . The surf was good and well worth an early night, the comp is on at Snapper check it out on Fuel TV probably finished tomorrow and we get our home back, but hey how bloody good are they each year they step it up [}:)]
