Although not a direct surfing related issue thought I would let everyone know what transpired on Saturday morning.

We had a spike of swell that lit up the local reefies and seeing as I have not surfed them much thought I would give it a crack. I met a mate at the parralel carpark , while the missus went for a coastal walk.

It was a beautiful morning with good sized sets coming through and I was just getting the hang of the place when someone paddled out and asked who owned a car fitting the description of my partners work car which we had parked directly opposite the break.

Someone had smashed the drivers side of the window and tried to break in before someone startled them by blowing their horn. they would have to stopped traffic to break in as it was a single lane road?? They never got the chance to grab anything thank god but the inconveniance is a bitch.

What was worse was the fact that I had to bail on a super fun day of sharing waves with my mate to drive home sitting on broken glass for absolutely no reason other than some druggie probably was $20 short on a fix and picked our car to try and break even with.

The area is far from dodgy as it is on the same stetch as some of the most expensive real estate on Western Australia, and it is popular with walkers, cyclists and joggers. Totally blind sided me but you can never be too surprised these days I guess.

The only time I was ever a victim was when I was at a beach up on the North Coast many years ago, I wasn’t surfing but I was on the beach with my family, the girls were really young.

The perps had tried to get into my fuel tank to siphon gas and had put a screw driver through the body work of the door handle and the tank flap. They also damaged several other cars.

A witness on a headland came down and told me who they were plus he gave me their rego numbers (2 cars, 4 blokes and 2 girls). As I drove down the road a bit I spotted the cars pulled up at a shop and I got out and told them to wait until the police got there and asked the shopkeeper to call the cops for me.

In the end there were just too many of them for me to hold even though I took a set of keys from one car and threw it into the bush (the little turd found them). To my discredit I got so upset I planted a right on the main dudes face and he hit the deck with arms, legs and hair flying all over the place. I swear I have never done that before or since and I’m ashamed of myself for loosing my self control and doing it then.

Anyways, the guy gets up all righteous and saintly and says he’s going to the cop shop to report me for assault. I wanted to do the right thing and take my licks for loosing control so I gave the shopkeeper the address of where I was staying.

A bit later the cops show up at the house and I tell them the whole story while they were still sitting in there car, as I finished, a call comes over their radio to say that “there’s a bloke in here who wants to report an assault down at the beach”.

I kid you not, the cop looked me straight in the eye, held the 2 way to his mouth and said, “okay you just keep him there and we’ll be down there to have a word with him”. The cops then just said to me “thanks mate, enjoy your holiday” and drove off.

I called them a bit later because I was still filled with remorse and they told me that the witness on the headland have come in to report the incident while the perps were still there so they had a case and as far as they were concerned, I was not of any interest to them.

I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad example of justice, the only thing I know for sure is that I really wish it had never happened in the first place.

Thieving brings out the worst in everything.

Just to end it on a positive note, we were on our way to Byron for a family holiday and it turned out to be a really good vacation, it was almost 20 years ago and it was then that I started to think about getting back into to surfing because I went for a surf out at Watago (sic) with a friend.

I was really bad but it was enough to get me interested.

Pity I wasted 10 years after that playing around with VW buggies when I could have been surfing.

BTW I getting rid of the buggy to concentrate on surfing, I want to make sure I ride as many waves as I can before my time is done.

Souwester , OBCT - I know ur pain.

About 5 years ago I was working nightshift and I used to knock off every morning @ 5am and head straight to the beach. I usually surfed out the front at Scarborough in those days.
I always used to stash my key under the front near the radiator. I remember that the surf was really good that morning and when I returned to my car - The old VS was gone , un-insured with about $5G owing on it. You probably coulda heard me swearing from up at Trigg.
So there I am , in a wetsuit with no money to call my girlie at the time and it was prob a 1.5 hr walk home.
Eventually after approaching people for a lift one nice lady let me sit in the front of her car in a nice wet wetsuit and drove me home.

Cops found my car 3 days later at City beach unscratched, windows down and stereo still there. It had been there the whole time.

There are some real pricks in the area Souwester and unfortunatley there aint a lot you can do to prevent break ins apart from NOT leaving your key under the car. If they want to get in , they will. Thievs target surfers . Another bad area is Durrs.

OBCT I would have no hesitation to react like you did and more[}:)].

I cant wait to catch someone in the act

When you think about it, surfers are good targets for tea leafs, lets face it, if they know you're in the water then there's a good chance they won't get sprung.

Sounds funny but I used to leave my VT wagon unlocked and never took phones ect, just some loose change for the old pie and chock milk after a sesh and it never got touched, but when I parked in front of my girlfriends place all locked up ect they broke a window and took everything.
Ya just never know when the pricks will show up and ruin the party!!

Yeah I got a VS wagon myself and the whole central locking on the key is a pain in the arse. I usually stash it under the car but will think twice now. My missus car is the same luckily I had the keys in a mates car not in hers.

I usually never take my wallet and phone for that reason, yeah If I caught the crims not sure what would have happened [}:)] Depends on whether or not I had the surprise advantage and what I had in my hands
