Hi all,

Recently arrived in Perth and hoping to take advantage of non windy days with some surfing. Have some limited surfing experience, bought a used 7 6" minimal, just wondering where are good spots, not too hectic to try and improve, currently living Wanerroo way. Heard Yanchep + Lancelin (when not howling) is good for slightly longer trips, any closer that are recommended? Saw something about Isolator? nearer the CBD that's apparently quite cruisy? Any other recommendations?

Thanks all

PS. Any dangers at recommended spots would be good, particularly fierce rips etc!

Good on ya mate for wanting to get out there and give it a go. Summer is generally the safer time of year to get into it. Have a search throught the forum for previous threads on rips etc.. as there should be heaps.

Rips are actually not such a bad thing when you are looking for a wave! They are the brown swirly parts of the beach with a lot of confused water on it. You just pretty much have to keep an eye on the ones that get really big and pull you out past the breakers. If ever caught in one that is really strong look for clearer water and paddle parralel to the beach. If in trouble dont panic and follow surf life saving procedure (have a look through web sites for that.

There can be waves any where along the coast given the right conditions. Scarborough/Trigg area is popular. Lancelin's back beach is definately worth a look but note Im not sure there is life savers there?

Always try and surf with a mate that makes it a lot safer. There is a lot to be covered from your post mate, have a scroll through the forum for more info and good luck

Unfortunatley surfing in Perth is almost non existant at the moment as there hasnt been any decent waves for some time now. However If ur living in Wanneroo I would have a look at Claytons- Mindari back beach, Mullaloo or even down at Mettams pool @ North beach.
Dont be too concearned about rips, they usually only appear when its a bit bigger.

Summer is on its way so ur on the right track with Lanno back beach. It usually picks up a touch more swell than Perth. Or if you have a 4wd head north from there to Wedge.

Hope this helps in ur quest for ripples.

Thanks for the info, as you say, will steer away from any monster days at the moment (seems unlikely for a while) and will try and sail with a mate though I have yet to make any surfer friends just yet being a Perth newbie, sure that will change soon enough though.

Will check out the spots mentioned and hope to see some of you out on the water when some decent waves start picking up!

Hey SMP, I'm just about to get a board myself (9'2) and have never surfed before, so if you get any good tips you want to pass on, let me know. I live up in Butler, so up near Wanneroo and Joondalup. Wouldn't mind finding somewhere around there to have a prac on some smaller waves.

Like I said, let me know how you go.

iso's is a fair treck from where your based, and trust me when i say you wont miss out on much! only if you like 12 guys to a wave on every wave! easily the most dangerous place to surf in perth! best bet are the beachies, like everyone has said. above all make sure you have fun!
