A couple of my favourite sayings that relate to surfing

" the surf no matter how bad is better than the surf in the car park"

and my favourite

" if the surf is too crowded, then go home and it won't be."

One of the most effective “call to arms” that will always encourage a surfer into the water was almost always the exclusive domain of women, at least around my house.

“the lawn could do with a mow”

On the subject of old surfer sayings, the Sepo ‘Surfer’ mag from the 60s had many stories that came together in the movie “Big Wednesday. I distinctly remember reading the one about the guy who sincerely told his best mate’s mum that as bad as he was, he would never take a wiz in her steam iron.

The figure of speech I recall most was the term they used for the local lass who really enjoyed the company of surfers in a biblical way.

“The Malibu grunter”

I may not have the “Malibu” bit right, but I’m sure I’ve got the “grunter” bit right.

I notice that in the movie they change this term to something else in the scene just before the big fight in the Mexican bar. They say something like “the point grinder”.

I preferred the term “grunter”, but for an impressionable young lad such as me, it did give me a rather warped insight into what I should expect from the ladies.

Up until about the age of 40 I still thought I was doing something wrong because I wasn’t hearing too much in the way of grunting.

I remember that story the name of the story was "No pants Lance". I've still got the mag. Another saying "If you have to ask, you won't understand'.

Outstanding, any chance you could dig it out to see how much I got right and even the year of the mag.

If I got any of it right it will help me come to terms with the early onset dementia my missus says I've got

Does anyone else recall the "Dictionary of Surfing". I recall it being written by Phil Jarrett back in the 80's. Has definitions & cartoons of surf sayings / words etc.

My 2 favourites:

Westie/ Brisso - someone who lives more than 2kms from the beach

Local: someone who has been in the water 1/2hour longer than you.

Rune, I like your sayings (philosophies).
My personal favorite, (which I use for motivation more each year that goes by)
is "If you ever stop surfing, Then you never did".

p.s. you need a comma after your first 'Surfing'.
