Hey folks im pretty raw to this surfing game and am pretty keen to have a crack at it. Ive picked the long board forum to start my research into all this as i reckon they will suit me better.

Im 6ft and am a chunky but fit 100kg, (top heavy from to much time in the gym...mispent youth...)

To start with what length board, brands and style should I be looking at?
I live in Perth so am probably going to get some 1 on 1 leasons to start with. Then see how i go from there.

What beaches are good to start from...are there any other option other Trigg and Scarb?

I work away and get 6 days off so I can get out midweek easily and avoid the crowds. Which will be good as I wont feel like such a dickhead when im falling on my arse all day.

Cheers

Rick.

First up welcome Ricko One simple rule in here mate, its all about fun

Well your built like me but you forgot, the good looking part out
Buy something around 9.6 or 10 x 23 x 3 nothing less in size or volume.

Head down Margaret way, wait for a massive swell.paddle out the back and just go.

Nah just kidding look for a small clean point break if there is one around your way.

Don't take sh-t from those shortboards ( they really want to join our ranks but lack the skill)

Never talk or show any sign of mateship to stand up paddle boards EVER.

Nah just kidding respect everyone who enters the ocean, even sharks

Remember,if surfing with a mate who gives you the sh-ts,wax the under side of his board,he will love ya for long time[}:)]and it will only cost ya five bucks for a cake of wax
Anyway that will get you started, all the best

what mac says for size, definitely don't be tempted to go under 23" wide.

The width is just as important as total volume in terms of effective flotation, early wave entry and a stable platform to get up on.

And Mac is wrong about the Sup thing, they are indeed worthy or your contempt

Hey Ricko, Like that name a lot. Another one of the good guys.

Secret Harbour south of Perth, just a touch up the road from Mandurah is not too bad at all. Singleton is a tad quieter. Only been surfing 18 months or so myself and am loving it. I surf around Scarborough as well so if you want go for a surf then send me a pm.

Cheers
Rick

But really looking forward to a full on weekend, playing bouncer at a good freinds sons 18th tonight.

Some nice waves on offer this weekend as well

No worries big fella but we all gotta start somewhere and compared to these guys I'm nothing special in the surf. You'll learn quicker if you have a mate nearby to hold your hand or p**s themselves laughing. It's all about fun and for me it de stresses me big time. Sing out when you feel comfortable.

G'day - for what it's worth, I'm 5'11" and a reasonably fit 110kg and surf a 7'3" x 22" x 3" (preferred) or a 9'1" x 22" x 3" in the smaller summer surf. I have however been surfing for 30yrs and know where to position myself and how to paddle onto a wave...

You can also try North Mullaloo - although this doesn't break well until about late March through to late October... (just little dumpers at this time of year), otherwise, the backbeach at Lancelin will give you plenty of space to fall off move...
