Down here in NSW we have to have fishing licences and its been that way for a number of years. At first I thought it was a rort but it is policed. I've been pulled up a few times and had to show my licence. Water police also have the power to check bags. There have been plenty of prosecutions and fines for people taking undersized fish and exceeding bag limits. There are people around who indiscriminately take undersized fish and shellfish and if getting caught and policing makes them think twice then that's fine by me. I cant imagine how a surfing tax will be introduced let alone policed. You didn't get this information from a Murdoch owned Newspaper did you ?

Surfing reefs do not work. Fact. Perhaps that will change one day in the future but it will be a while. The reef needs to be completely dedicated to surfing to be successful. Given our holistic approach to coastal management these days I can not see this happening anytime soon.

Why don't they get in bed with GW or KS and build some decent pools. I am sure if they gave the land up someone would jump all over it. Then tax people after the fact.

The artificial reef they built in Perth works quite well. They built it in a spot that doesn't get lots of swell, but it did increase the number of days per year that that reef was surfable and the quality of the wave got better. I don't know how they would go on a sand bottom though.
