Within every group of surfers there is a few basic personalities, for example "The Frother" who is always up for the early, surfs every condition known to man and just loves it, will often stay out way longer than everyone else and is the first up the next day for more chomping at the bit.

The frother is just one example to get the thread started, chip in with one that you think you know or that you know you are. Another classic is the "Wanne be Pro" who you can only coax out if its all time, not interested in an onshore slop with the boys only likes it perfect. Th list could go on. I think I fit into the frother catagory

Well I would say I am a frothing dreamer,(be nice now) quit often found day dreaming at work about some nice clean waves on the weekend. When I know its going to be clean and not too solid I start frothing in the car.Is it normal to feel this way at my age?
I know another guy on this forum much the same, just talking to him and sense his excitement, passion in his voice and his eyes. Wonder who I am talking about?

Mr Encouragement can give you the poops.

He’s an okay surfer in his own right, not great, just okay.

His problem is he hoots and hollers encouragement whatever wave you’re on and tells you what a good ride it was. Trouble is, you know it was at best average and you’re a long way short of a top rider.

He’s trying to be really nice, and he is but it feels kind of icky because you’re too old to be getting the sort of encouragement that a mum would usually reserve for her child at the end of a soccer game, regardless of how crap he was.

Yes, we do have one locally, I’ve also referred to him in the past as have-a-chat.

Mr Encouragement can be a tad tedious. What about the "Bailer", is only half the man the frother is. Always calls it and is dead keen then pulls out at the last minute. Usually the first to whinge if you score good surf and they were not invited.

Every one has a mate that you would label "The Ripper", surfs well most of the time on various craft. Can go from catching heaps on your mal to flying along and carving on a 5'10 fish......frustrating.

You know, I’ve often wondered if Mr. encouragement/have-a-chat has any ulterior motives for his gregarious attitude

I can only think of 2, he’s either a bum boy or religious fanatic.

I’ll just need to keep an eye on him and see what he ends up doing or saying out in the car park.

I guess if he hands me a copy of Watchtower or some similar publication, that would be a good indication of his inclinations in one direction and if he offers to help me get out of my wetty by getting in there with me it would be a good indication of the other direction.

Not really sure what to think if I was bending over getting out of my wetty and he delivered a copy of watchtower up my ginger. That would be confusing.

Not so much in a group, but at a spot, "The phantom ripper". Comes out of the woodwork when the surf is good, rips the bags out of it, then disappears again. Very few people know him but everyone has seen him shred.
