Gotta love this time of year, scored good size, clean, uncrowded waves with little or no wind. My quads were burning from rail to rail turns and my arms could barely roll one afterwards!

Shared the peak with 3 other friendly shortboarders. Called each other into heaps and can honestly say that was one of the best surfs I have had. All within a short drive from home.

Actually got lost on the way to a spot we wanted to get to and found a beach peak that handled the bigger sets. Fast, steep takeoffs, a long wall and then a mellow section at the end for a little trip to the front. Un-bloody-believable!

Sounds like a cracking day - sometimes getting lost is the best thing that can happen.

Need to get out tomorrow!

yep, winter is tops, had almost the exact same thing happen to me this arvo at Collaroy.

For those of you who don't know, Collaroy has the main road to the northern beaches only about 50 meters from the beach so you would expect plenty of bods in the water but there were only 2 others as I paddled out, both longboards.

No sooner did I get to the line up, I was given a cheerful greeting and offered the very next wave that popped up.

As each of us paddled back out we just waited our turn and if one of us couldn't make a wave, we would do everything we could to make sure one of the others did (I hate late take offs).

Then would you believe, one of us got out of the water and another longborder dives in off the rock pool and he's every bit as courteous as the guy who just got out.

Yep, ya gotta luv winter.

Its dropping off here too but I never trust the report, always go and find out for my self. Have scored a few times like that.

Headin to the mystery beachie I have (now labelled "Losts" cos thats how we found it ) this weekend. A little less swell but thats the beauty of longboarding. Instead of steam train walls I can play on the smaller fatter waves and practice the cross stepping.

Just out of curiosity,I used to live in Manly, was born near there (cant remember where exactly) and moved to WA then back to Manly when I was 6 (then back to WA ). Used to go to Bowgowlah Hieghts private school, did surf life saving there but never got the chance to surf. Whats is like around that neck of the woods?

The surfing and in general I guess. I have fond memories of ice creams at the Corso after little nippers, a really steep street we used to fly down on our bikes and a place called forty baskets where there were rock pools.

Not sure how accurate my memories are but sounds close enough. Used to also love watching the mighty Sea Eagles!

SW, on the surface of it, I don't think you would recognize the Manly of old, she's choc a bloc full of backpackers.

And you'll probably pay 10 bucks for that ice cream.

Just under the surface there's still a very local vibe.

So many of he Manly crowd were actually from all along the northern beaches, and they're still around.

Can't say I share you're love of the sea eagles, even though I only live less than a mile away from brooky oval.

I grew up out at Parra so we always considered that lot as silvertails.

CC, I was almost going to text you this arvo, from 3 onwards I had a decent wave at DY between the point and the surf club. There were only shorties out and so I had the fullish waves all to myself.

Summers pretty crowded around here - beach is left a mess every afternoon when all the punters leave and don't take their trash, generally seems to be the 20 and under crowd (blown in or local doesn't matter) are the worst offenders. Winter is a bit more mellow less people around but a better "vibe".

Surf is OK depends on what the banks are doing, if it's really good it can be shoulder to shoulder and there's some real dick head surfers around especially in the higher profile / more known NB breaks like Manly, Narrabeen, Dee Why, Avalon (are the ones that stick out). Manly gets a lot of people that come in from other suburbs because it's easy same that kinda happens to Cronulla and Bondi.

Good to get in the car and explore a little there's some really fun breaks around, and you can pretty much find some where that's working unless it's a direct easterly wind or dead dead flat. Big days you can surf Collaroy or a couple of "novelty" breaks in Pittwater depending on swell direction, When I had shoulder recon a year or so ago I was driving home from work and N/E swell was lining up down Mona Vale like it was trying to be the super bank (never seen that happen again). Most of the time people that surf here are friendly and respectfull, as I pointed out some are not but that's probably the same everywhere. We don't seem to have a we hate longboard group around Manly probably for the sole reason that they'd be out numbered.

Surf Clubs still doing it's thing - I'm a member at Manly - and the ice cream joints are still there, even have a Ben and Jerry's (man that stuffs good). Sunday Nippers on the Beach is insane because you have Manly, North Styne, and Queenscliff nippers running around plus the other groups from all 3 training as well.

I love living in Manly great culture and good people (for the most part) I'm not sure how the Corso gets a bad rap I've never seen a fight (almost ended up in one by default though), I pretty much never leave the northern beaches unless I'm going on a trip or have to go to the city (which isn't very often).

Bower was fun today - bit inconsistent and windy (and dead low tide) but most I was out with was 5 and there was once or twice it was just little old me, managed to get a couple of great waves, missed the wave of the day though.

The Eels - Damn Fibro's

Would have loved to - can barely lift the arms at the moment from my bower session, haven't done any chores, my names mud! maybe tomorrow, I've got to the end of the week to surf my guts out work starts Monday (which smily do you put for that?)

Forgot the footy - the Hill still lives! That place is great entertainment, not the footy the characters that show up. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Eagles move up to the Warriewood sports complex thought, it would probably be a better spot in some regards.

Yep, I got tired towards the end of my session and I started doing this thing where I don't put my right foot into position before I try to stand up. I keep it too far out on the rail, the foot slips off and I look like a right wally.

Don't know if it's a bad habit, laziness, tiredness, old age and early onset dementia or a combination of all of the above but it sure gives me the poops.

I think I'm just trying to get on my feet too quickly, I guess you could call it the surfing equivalent of premature ejaculation but without all the mess

I'm almost tempted to put a strip of non slip on that outer edge as a guide to where my foot should not be placed.

Guys a great insight into the Sydney vibe, I have enjoyed the read.
Manly, only been there once in 1991 on a road trip.
Man we hit the peak hour traffic from Parra way all the way across the bridge.
Oh drove from the Goldie to Melbourne to visit my sister and drove the coast road heading home, what a great trip. Anyway my knees where shaking from the traffic and once arriving at our hotel in Manly grabbed the nearest beer down the mall.
It looked like a nice vibe going around and enjoyed a wave the next day before hitting the road again.

I had a mad Manly fan in my store the other week, I got chatting to her and she told me she goes to EVERY Manly game. I asked her,so you travel to Canberra,Townsville,Brisbane and Gold Coast, yes was the answer. FM this lady is keen.Got to love the passion.

The Manly feeder team is on the Goldie.

There's groups of these people everywhere, there's a large local group that travel to most away games. I'm sure other teams have this but the biggest group I've seen is the Manly fans.

Yeah rush hour in Sydney sucks driving around here is a joke.

That's why I switched to public transport a couple of years ago.

There was a time when I wouldn't be caught dead on a bus, now I dread the thought of driving into the city even though I usually have unlimited free parking when I'm managing a building.

If you've got a seat, a newspaper or book, an ipod, some chewing, then the traffic jams on the bridge just fade into the background.

i will admit that a lot depends on the model of the bus, some just have zero legroom it you're over 6ft.

And a travel ten ticket means each trip only cost about $3.40 whereas the bridge toll at peak hour is $4.

The $3.40 ticket would actually get you all the way to Palm Beach from the CBD. Pity they don't put board racks on the government busses.

Agree with you mate. I spent quite a bit of time in Sydney last year and for all the complaints we heard about your public transport we were blown away by just how good it was. Jeez we would get off a train and never wait more than a few minutes for another train or bus and most people were pretty friendly as well. The suburban buses were awesome and I was commuting from Clovelly for a period of time and couldn't believe how the bus drivers actually gave way to cars and pedestrians and drove pretty well - certainly compared to some of the arrogant s.o.b's I see here on the goldy trying to kill car drivers and pedestrians on a daily basis. Yeah I know this is kinda off topic but I am expressing my love for your beautiful city and it is winter, so I guess I am covered hey.
(don't know that I could live down there but definately one of the great cities on earth for a holiday or regular visit)
