i love the gloss boards i have ever owned and never really thought there could be much off a difference between them performance wise....now i think gloss boards are really just to make them pretty and offer no advantage, in fact i believe that they actually hinder the performance compared to the pro finish(comparing my and the new clearwater..

cmc this one is at you..so what does everyone else think?

yes i do now have a major man crush on steve del rosso...clearwater anyone

well it depends on lots of things Chrispy - from the type of waves you surf, the board shape etc but if you find that it works for you then I say who cares what everyone else thinks!!! Maybe its the combo of the finish with the responsive rails

Matte finish is best for performance, weight saving.
Gloss looks the best with tints.

Pro finish is much more forgiving for the home ding repairer

Two schools of thought on this one Mr Chrispy. Some will tell you that as polyester resin is actually porous (not very but absorbs water) that the finish coat seals and creates an egg shell type protective layer.

The other thought is that poly resin has no strength and adding an extra layer to the top can actually weaken the board as it cracks easily when flexed, this then creates fissures which split into the cloth fibres.

The thing is though, you never see a lightly glassed board finish coated and polished so if the weakness theory is correct (and any composites literarature will agree) that it is overcome by adding more layers of cloth, heavy blank etc.

They look great but don't they... I love a good polished log Mal.

The real skill is having glasses and sanders good enough to get polished type finishes without adding the finish coat to get it.

Of course then there are sprayed 2 pacs etc that polish very well and add strength without much weight but that's another chapter.

Yes CMC, I have 2 boards that are "pro-finish", but they have been buffed up. No finish coat.

The Blue Keyo is one of them.

I am polishing my new stick - already purchased the finish resin so there is no turning back Most of my short boards in recent times have been pro-finish or similar.
