Manly to Newport is pretty much the surfboard shaping hub of the country, volume wise....

But yeah, where do you start..... ???

The Redline & Fireball are a good starting point.... Not the cheapest boards around, but worth the money.... look after it, and your learning board will be a keeper.

This might be the best $800 you ever spend !!

Good luck !!

To be honest, I wouldn't waste your time in the $400-$600 range. Rip Curl and others have some entry level Malibu's that are made in Thailand.

Tufflite have a decent range, and they are pretty tuff and lite, but not overly cheap.

That Redline is "The Bomb", as they said in the ad! Great value if you can snatch it for $800 or so... to $900. OK value at $950 still.

The hand writing on the McTavish boards mean they are made here, in Oz, in Byron. Like this one.
www.use.com/supersize.pl?set=&p=9

When those dimensions are printed on, looking like a Computer/Newspaper Text, it means the McTavish board is actually a GSI (Global Surf Industries) board from Thailand. Which are still good. But they only do a limited range, limited colours.... designs, etc.

How much Mac !?

While I was gone, I just squeezed in a quick surf at Cosy Corner in Torquay on my 17 foot Naish Down Wind Board. Crazy stuff surfing 17 feet ! But Mac, as you said, you learn stuff everytime you go out... !!

Light SW breeze, so Cosy was clean, but tiny.

Last light is just vanishing down here now.... Vico winter swells are great, and summer twilight is brilliant !!

Not that keen on selling it as I am thinking of leaving it in Bali,if I trade ,it will get 900 done deal at my local store,so anywhere from 850 or its going to live in a new country.

Then don't be too despondent if you try to surf on any of the boards being suggested here and find you can't even catch a cold let alone a wave.

Just store it for a bit, get a slow old beater with lots of volume and width, 23 inches would be good. Lean to paddle, snap to you feat and balance, then get the good board back out and have some fun.

Better still, take a surf lesson on a soft top, you'll be the best one there because all the others will be pommy back packers and they'll still be pissed from the night before, even the guys.

I promise you, that Redline is great board. Thin at 2"5/8 as I think it might have been a custom for a girl. But with that much board area, 2"5/8 is OK for your weight.

This bit is "cut & paste" from my post in Shortboard sections.
---------------------------
Learning to surf;

The hardest parts, and partial solutions are;

1) Paddle Fitness, Paddle Speed, Explosive Power when paddling for a wave - so get fit, or keep fit!

2) Reading Waves, Wave Knowledge - watch and learn, watch the waves, watch others, and watch surf videos.

3) Getting to your feet - you need to get to your feet with good balance... get up smoothly. You can't have too much weight on either rail (fall in sideways), too much weight back you will stall, but a little bit of extra weight on the front early helps get you going...

(4 - once you are on your feet, riding the wave isn't all that hard !)

And I think "3" is still the hardest !! I don't really have any problem with it, but once in a while, everyone stuffs it up !

Might sound basic enough, and look basic enough..... but I'm hard pressed to think of a sport with a harder learning curve at the start....

The trusty Malibu is a good starting point. Forgiving for getting to your feet.... But don't pick up bad habits either....

Further to that;

If you have no board skills at all, such as snow, wind, kite, etc, or have never spent too much time at the beach as a kid, etc, then get a group lesson to start with.

If you have some wave skills, swimming skills, bodyboarding past, catching waves, ship to shore style, etc, it will be worth your while getting a 1 on 1 lesson.

Summer is coming around, and there is always a girl or two who begs me for a "private lesson" (), and I have a 100% hit rate at getting them to their feet, and up and riding, within 20-30 minutes !! On real boards, not dodgey soft tops with the worlds floppiest fins!!

Thats a good bit of advice. The surftech soft top board look pretty good and still ride good as well but they are only semi soft.

The surftech softops are pretty rigid and although I haven't ridden one I reckon they would go alright for a learner. Some of the others on the market that are really soft or have too much flex probably wouldnt be a good choice. You pretty much get what you pay for.

They dont spray them like that anymore. Is that an old Hot Buttered ?The guy who used to do those sprays is Martin Worthington and he's still working. I reckon a spray like that would run into a couple of hundred bucks at least.
