from long board to short board.

for me two things

let the board run down the wave more then a longboard before you get up- you need speed.

2,make sure the back foot is right back on the tail pad

ps no mid length talk- that means you too cobra, pass that onto weiry when you see him

I don't seem to have a problem adjusting from my 9.6 shortboard to my 10 foot board.

for me.... Getting on the shortboard is all about commitment
Being willing to paddle and take steeper drops.
I'm bigger than the "average bear" who surfs shortboards, longboards offer a nice glide in...shortboards...all about commitment.

Do love the speed and manoeuvrability of short boards though

Good topic

For me, getting onto my short board after a while on the long board I need to focus more on projecting across the wave quickly and getting that back foot back too (I recently put a tail pad on so I know when I have it back far enough haha).

Love dropping down from the 10 footer to the 5'10 - probably because it means we have waves again I seem to have no problem stepping down - its like you are on a skateboard out on damp concrete. You can really dig the back foot in and do some incredible turns My issue is that when I go the other way my body still thinks its on a shortie and I blow heaps of waves whilst bottom turning - the board seems to not bother turning whilst I fall in! I really need to concentrate and remind myself that I can not turn a 10 footer like a shortie.

I ride a shortie 90-95% of the time though so that is probably why.

I find the main diff is the takeoff, I found I get pretty lazy on the takeoffs with too much lb and some time on the 7'er can sharpen things up as the waves are steeper.

I actually find the 7'er easier to turn and ride though, no walking up the board to trim and back to turn.

I'm the opposite to you Ted, 90% on the lb, which can be quite funny when I hit the sb and immediately try and walk up the board, which is good in one sense as it's become second nature on the lb

The other thing I did was take out that 7"fin in the long board and go with the thruster setup.

Sure harder to cross step on but the board is so?oo much faster and lighter under foot.

So today it didn, t feel like I was surfing a penny skate board when I got back on the shortie..

Ted you get that many good waves you ride a shortie ninety% of the time. You must be very selective about what you surf.

Im not prepared to go to dbar and the like just to ride the shortie anymore

Best thing I every did was widen my horizons

I started longboarding about this time 2012. Just before summer & I surfed right through summer on the longboard. Just loving the easy paddle in, early takeoff & ability to surf waves even below knee high. Surfed it right up till the next swells started around the end of March (no cyclones here unfortunately).

I remember the decent sucky ok banked day at the local beachy about waist to shoulder that I took out my 6' Fire wire Hellfire I'd loved the previous winter. First thing I noticed was how deep in the water I was as I paddled. Felt like I was sinking & hated the feeling. Kids were paddling into the waves no probs & I was struggling. When I got one I felt super unko with my weight distribution (forward/back)...sold the Firewire a few weeks later lol...& got a wide 6'4 to recuperate which I surfed through winter, jumping on the LB probably 1/2 the time throughout 2013.

I now have have 8 boards, but only really need 4, gonna sell 2 soon. Usually take at least 2 boards, SB & LB, but sometimes 2 SB's & a LB. Then ducking home for the 666 if its really grovelly. Loving it coz I'm pretty much covered for anything over ankle high.

But coz I'm spending a lot more equal time on the SB & not just on the LB all the time. I find the transition between boards no problem. If anything its actually been very beneficial coz I'm out way more than when I only rode a SB. Way more paddle fit now and have a far more positive attitude to wave conditions. Unless its totally flat I don't really give a fark, coz I can have fun in any size waves and if its off shore I really appreciate the it heaps. Should really take up kite surfing and then I'd be fully covered

Yes I am to be fair. Recently I have been so busy with work that if the surf is not what I call reasonable I just head home and do work. Rather save my surf time for when its decent. Sad state of affairs. Things will be changing soon though I promise. Still have the LB and use it but just not as often as I could. Also we have had 2 absolutely crap months of surf which does not exactly appeal I have been mountain biking the last 3 weekends for fitness !
