Hi folks, I'm my late 50s and surfing now results in several days of scary neck pain. I know lots of you are older and still surf pain free but my back and neck has always been my weak point. Anyway having gone from short to mid-length to mal to knee paddling log I seem to have run out of options to lie down and was thinking of trying a knee board. Anyone got any thoughts on life as a kneelo? Thanks

I was on a kneeboard in the past. I was inspired by Greenough and a Northern Beaches guy Peter Crawford. Somehow I ended up on longboards and windsurfing. It is in my opinion a good way of surfing. Just not popular. You are close to the water and a chest high wave for standup is head high on a kneeboard. So a different perspective that I only realised after longboarding. I had a go on a kneeboard after 35 years gap and it was very unfamiliar so it will have a little learning curve to ride well. After borrowing the board I remember having water hitting my face like back spray on an offshore day. Probably my lack of technique. I think if it keeps you in the water go for it. I keep looking for a cheap spoon but they don't exist. Good luck being a cripple (as I was sometimes called).

I don't have any affiliation with this mob, but I have a good friend who is no longer able to pop up and is in his late 70s. He's just bought a Gut slider and apparently loves it to bits.

A good mate and a great longboarder who now is unable to surf got into gut boarding after spending 3 years out of the water and absolutely love it.

Hi fellas. I am unable to stand up any more now after nearly 60 years of surfing due to multiple injuries. Two knee replacements, 3 shoulder ops ( one completely replaced ) and an achilles tendon rupture . Note - surfing did not directly cause these injuries though. I now swim and body surf to get my dose of salt water and on occasion lie prone on a beginner foamie. It's not the same but better than nothing. I have for sale an Oke gut slider surfboard on Gumtree if anyone is interested. I know that someone else in this thread mentioned them.

I have to admit I will be gut sliding when all else fails get on any surf craft that you are able to and enjoy the ride at least you're out there.
