Just wondering if the sideways mals are any good for a first time longboarder?

Yes great starting point imo.

Glassing could be light on but the shape is fine for a starter.

Thanks Macaha,
Is there any shape you recommend? Was looking at the cannon in 9ft.

Just checked in on the Sideways website - been years since I looked at it. They have certainly boosted their product range - even stocking a full range of Diverse boards at very cheap prices. That Mal looks like it's glassed with 6 & 6/4 combo. As long as it's a good blank you should be sweet. It's a quality factory setup they come out of and uses good resins.

I saw a bloke in Samoa about 3 years ago on a shortie of theirs He ripped on it and it seemed to built well

Enjoy.

Only thing I'd say is unless your under 50kg a 9'er is too short of you wanna learn to nose ride, 9'6" is about the sweet spot depending on your weight and hight. Budget dependant a Clearwater would probably set you back just over $1100 and she'd be custom, or check around there was a sweet looking 2nd hand south coast on sb and ebay/Gumtree are always full of great 2nd hand mctavish

Diverse Da pig mals for $595...now that's a trip. I wondered what Dave's been up to since he split to Indo.
The glass jobs on his boards while he was here were excellent (imo) so hopefully they have continued this over there.
Crazy cheap price.

The 9ftr is a bit narrow at 22 More a HP, comp board type dimensions then a cruiser but still noseridable at your weight. maybe look at the 9'4 but it is probably a touch on thick side.

Kinda depends on where you surf? And how you are going to surf it..
If it is a short beachie type wave I'd look at the 9 if it is a fat point or weak beachie then maybe the 9'4.

I'm the same weight etc as you.

Spot on. He is a Central Coast local shaper with a lot of experience behind him.
Haven't heard a bad word about his boards. He even teaches novices how to shape and glass their own boards.

was thinking the exact samething - saw tghe Diverse pig at the Tweed store about 3 weeks ago.

The Da Pig is a good model - my brother has one and loves it.

Agree it is all about the glass / blanks being used but at $550 you can't go wrong

I'll go ahead and recommend an ECS mal because I probably should. Haha sorry to pimp breezers! On sale at the moment too

I've ridden them for 18 months or so, great boards.

As for sideways, the old man bought one a few months back, was decent enough although the rails are pretty soft, at least on this one. Fall off and land on the rail and you'd almost have a guaranteed shattered rail. Its like they forgot to overlap the glass on the rails and only put resin, no glass at all.
