G'day Guys,

Regarding fins alone, and not accessories, who has the bigger market share, FCS or Futures in 2016/17?

FCS has been the go to fin company for ages but in some countries Futures has really come along way in the past several years.

Any thoughts out there?

I would say FCS, but Futures have a strong following.

Agreed, I like FCS2 as well. No screws makes it for me, click in and go.

id say fcs has the legacy as in there would be most boards with fcs fins due to the age they have been ariund for of my last 3 boards purchased 2 were futures and 1 was fcs.
im interested if anyone has some stats on this my shaper gives either option and in regards to personal preference i lean more towards the futuresas i feel that they are a better ride being countersunk into the board. the flex point onthe fins is more like a.traditional board.
to be honest the best board i have ridden in the last few years is the occy model billabong/rusty i did truly enjoy the nostalgia and the shape of the board, but and this is the most important bit, having glassed in glass fins was amazing. noy just a bit better but amazingly better,.yes im from the margo, luke egan, matt hoy, occy generation so there was some definate swaying to favour style... but lets be honest unless you are a travelling pro or its a allrounder board the original is still the best when it comes to fins... i know we have the choice to interchange fins but when you see a shaper and tell them where you will use said boad it is best to get glass fins, let the shaper make fins for the board the rider and the wave. this takes a couple boards to get right......you have to slay the dragon to get the princess..........

Side rant: you buy a board with no fins.................why????........

hello sir would you like to buy a car with no wheels??

No no id like wheels,

ok very well, well we have bobcat wheels, or truck tyres...

no i just want car tyres, you sell cars but no car tyres????

yes well you see we are only a rep for bobcat tyres and truck tyres. we have an agreement signed with marketing brand 1 and the licensing agreement does not clarify which wheels are required..

so your telling me you have designed a vehicle but not the wheels for it to drive on????

Yes yes thats correct,

what else do you sell here?

oh we have a whole new range, boards without fins, we will make millions

FCS by a country mile. But their market share is nothing like it once was.

Some good background reading here if you interested

Lots of reports in of people losing their fins in the water - personally I have never lost any that way. Although some punk stole a set off my board whilst on my balcony not so long ago. Was pretty pissed off at the time ! Wish I had them screwed in at the time.

If I was worried I would put a rear screw in. I have heard this but tbh it would be a hard knock to get one out.

I agree with your side rant, but, if fins were supplied with a board it would be as much as $1000.00 as fins now cost $150+(FCS2) and futures are similar. Plus most people already have fins that they like. Swings and round-a-bouts.

I was actually a little concerned about how much of a knock with the sole of my shoe to remove my fcs2's. I reckon they'd slice me before they came out if I was unlucky enough to hit them from that funny angle. If they have come out for some people I'd say the fin is not right for the fin box. FCS2 fins are different to FCS. I was gonna stick some AM2's into the board but it just didn't feel like it was seating well. Unfortunately it would not appear FCS2 has the legacy of supporting all fins made for FCS boxes based on my limited expereince.

But yeah I'd be more concerned I have a good glass job holding the fin box in with the fin removal beating.

The Occy board does look good Razz...I'm considering a 6'10 gun with glassed in fins atm. I think you would really need bigger/suckier waves to really notice it...also felt the same way about futures being seated having the whole base rather than just a couple of tabs. Well thought/believed rather than felt...best board for me in the last few years was probably a 6 foot Firewire Hellfire. Keen to give the scifi a go, I just missed a good deal on one last week. Heard nothing but good things about it.

Glassed in is the best by far, had a few with them. My next down south board will be glassed in fins.

fcs used to be good until fcs 2 came out and I just didnt like or trust the system and also new fins were required, although they do sell the infill kits I was wary so held off

And I am glad I did, occasionally working in a surf shop the amount of people needing to get replacement fins really surprised me and 90% said they didn't hit anything but just noticed the board going weird and when they checked it was missing a fin

Simple fix is to put at least one screw in the tab to prevent it

FCS are good fins but personally I like Futures more now

Futures is growing and have a very simple and effective rating system so you dont have to be paralysed trying to work out the technicalities

Would love to have glassed in fins again...

Thanks heaps for all that info.

What about 3D fins? Are they getting popular you think? They seem to be far less common than FCS and Futures. Any random input would be great.

I'm not a fin guy, on purpose. Many moons ago I chose to just basically buy one set of FCS 1 fins and dabble with a few small trailer and nubster fins on my shortboards. That has suited me til recently but I may increase my arsenal I reckon.

3D have the golf ball dimples that Josh Kerr uses, they are done in Futures and FCS1.
