Have seen a lot of reviews of the electric foil assist (e.g. FoilDrive, Duotone Foil Assist, Stoke Foiling) for wing foiling, SUP foiling, prone, and downwind, but nothing for windfoil. Has anybody tried using any of the system for windfoiling?

The main challenge I see is mounting the controller on the boom, or accessing the controller on either side of the boom. The duotone electric foil assist seemed to be best suited for this with the thumb controller. The motor should have enough thrust to boost onto the foil even with the extra weight of the windfoiling gear. But wondering if anybody has real world experience with this?

Mainly looking for an electric foil assist to maximise on water time as I work full time and there are more days of marginal wind condition than none. Plus with young kids at home, time on the water is precious. If I can get out of wind shadow and up to the line quickly,or even get back to shore safely when the seabreeze dies, that would be well worth it...if it works

I haven’t tried it windfoiling but have with wing and parawing. Easiest with para as you can fly it with one hand, the other on the controller. You only need a tiny amount of power to get up to foiling speed so even a small battery lasts way longer than needed.
i use Foildrive, nothing attached to you and fits easily to any board or mast. My worry with the Duotone is if you fell forward on the other side of the mast in a catapult you might rip the cable out of the unit. My controller is mounted on my waist by a reel leash, once I’m foiling I just drop it and it disappears behind my back.

I think the added weight might be a downside for windfoiling.

I use FoilDrive when I windfoil, gets me to the windline. I have long launch area that has a wind shadow.
It's an older unit (Assist Plus), but has plenty of thrust to get me out of the shadows or home when the wind dies.

I hold the remote in my one hand (via the wrist strap). Works OK. Gonna try hanging it from the impact vest in a bungee and maybe try hanging it above the boom.

I've thought about it for a few years, another benefit to those you mentioned is that you can use smaller sails and foils than you would otherwise, but still need a board big enough to uphaul.

I went the other way - bought a Fliteboard to froth in 12-0 knots, glassy conditions are magic 😀

Thanks for the reply! That's exactly what I thought an electric assist for windfoil would be good for. Not so much to get on the foil, but to get to the wind line, out of the shadow and return to shore when the wind dies. Glad o hear that you've found it helpful. Might look into the Stoke Foil Drive then

That's a good point. The waist battery seem prone to getting ripped when falling off the board. I've had some high impact fall from winging as well. Not sure if that's a common problem with Duotone system. The Stoke Foil Drive seemed to be a good system for just getting to and from the windline

The benefit of trying is that even if it doesn't work for your windfoiling you will have a Foil Drive! 😀They look like a blast and something that gets you foiling and, in the water, when the wind is light or even if it isn't. They are amazing in small waves and a great way to improve your foil pumping skills. Using one to get to a wind line seems reasonable and achievable. For straight foil drive use you do not need a specialized board to get started, use your windfoil board without the sail. I imagine the are easier to resell than used windfoil gear.
I took a chance on using a big pump foil to improve my light air experience. I figured that if it did not work at least, I could try Foil scooter, and it would be a fun tow foil. The foil works brilliantly for windfoiling and has opened up many more fun sessions! Fool Scoot is a blast and gives me something to do when the wind is low.
The silver lining of our sport not getting the industry's attention is that we get to be the innovators!
Blaze the new path and tell us what you learn😀

Just take your foil drive and go play with the other jet skis.
These things have no place mixing with prone, paddle, or wind powered activities.

Dean Peaple is a talented dude and his videos and posts about windfoiling have been really useful. He was an early adopter and his content "Back in the Day" was timely. I am waiting patiently for him to find some time for windfoiling again!

Me too - Dean's Texas vids 8 or 9 years ago were very cool 😎 - before winging was a thing.

I think he and someone else at Kelly park were the ones that were offering me all kinds of help. I was totally clueless, trying to get going fast by either foiling or planing, and I think talking to him and seeing him sail was helping me understand better the conditions and setup I needed. It's been 6 years though so my memory isn't great, and I had only been to that spot once or twice.

My ears are burning lol.

That’s too funny. I was following the thread on the slingshot Tuttle box the other day and I just so happen to see this thread today.otherwise It’s been ages since I’ve been on Seabreeze.

I have a pretty bad medical condition why I had to postpone wind foiling. I got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis last October, but it was three years of agony on my wrists and for some reason, the angle of a boom and stress on my forearms made it exponentially worse.

Winging did not affect my wrists nowhere near as bad because you’re hanging more from the handles and the wind lifts the wing.

I still have my board and rigs… pretty much everything and maybe one day…Hopefully I can start testing to see if I get any bad reaction.

RA is no joke, it’s not just oh I’m sore, it’s level 10 pain, but with treatments and anti inflammatory diet (I lost 30 lbs) I starting to feel so much better.

Anyways getting back on topic…I found the foil assist in light winds to be somewhat cumbersome.

The rig felt pretty heavy with no wind in it when it’s less than 8-9 mph so you’re having to balance that with the pitch of the foil.

Good luck with your RA. I friend of ours has been battling with that for years, brutal stuff. Hope you get some lasting relief.

I tried this with a Stoke foil on my IQ setup to get out past the wind line on certain wind directions. It worked great to get me out there but once I tried to fly it was very noticeable. The weight and the imbalanced feeling when trying to get on foil was not fun. It made steering inputs with the feet very sluggish and at speed it was downright scary. Perhaps with a freeride or wave setup it might be fun. Overall it was a big fail for me.
