Interesting moment yesterday at the European championships. Johan Soe was first going up the second upwind leg and it looked like Grae Morris had a bit better of an upwind line and was able to round the windward mark first before the last downwind leg. We've all seen how much speed Soe has had offwind in the PWA the last several years but he couldn't make up much if any of his deficit on this leg. Both were very fast, of course. Interesting that Morris had the back foot out downwind.Time stamp about 1:38:56 in.

Loving the drone work. It’s an awesome view getting that close, and on the lines they’re taking so we can see angle changes/sheeting/footwork etc. also glad to hear young Rafferty has toned his commentary down to normal. I used to just switch the sound off with his earlier work, much better now.

Grae definitely picked a a better lay line on the upwind. One of the few advantages of not being in the lead is getting to see if the leaders are making the mark or not (speaking from too much experience😂). I don’t know how some iq foilers can hook the back strap downwind. 10knots it’s doable, much more and suddenly there’s too much power there (for me). It would be interesting to know the rider weights, they’re all on 8.0m in iq. I can’t say I followed who rigged what in PWA races, but I’m wondering if Grae is a bit lighter than Johan is? It’s a slightly different ball game when you can’t use that bigger sail when you weigh more.

Hey guys...I just saw this thread.
Luuk (NED-55) is 6'7", Grae (AUS-81) is 6'4" & Johan DEN-37) is 6'2". Not sure of weights.
They are obviously strong, but their biggest attribute is fitness.

The real issue is the 8yr old equipment that is just not up to the task.
The foils and boards were never designed to be worked this hard and the failure rate has become a huge issue.
For example: The last 3 events Grae competed in for this season:
1- Europeans: Grae broke 2 new foil masts . Day 1 and the medal series. No redress available. 2nd to 7th.
2- French Olympic week: Front foil split in 2. Luckily it broke in the last race of the day. 1st.
3- Parma. The board foil box collapsed. He had to carry multiple DNF's and went from 2nd to 12th.

Good times...(heavy sarcasm)

Thanks for that insight, you can see how much power/stress they must be generating on the foil masts and foils boxes when they start pumping those 8 m sails!

Are there talks of a gear refresh so we don't go back down the same road RS:X did?

As said above, appreciate the insight. Thanks for the response. Watched and enjoyed a fair amount of the Euros coverage on The Foil's youtube channel. IQ seems to get a lot of respect in the wider sailing community.
