Madness!! 25 knots on foils feels like 40 on normal gear, cant imagine how scary 40 on foils would be.

A question: who on earth claims speed records over a 2" framework? Nothing comes to mind other than this "record" by Godard ...

A lot of speedsurfers focus on "top speed", which is a single point measurement and the least accurate speed number. Top speed is even used as one of several numbers in some speedsurfing competitions.

2 seconds is quite an improvement over that; with the Motion GPS he apparently was using, the 2 second speed likely includes 10 or 20 points (depending on whether he's recording at 5 or 10 Hz).

One problem with 2 second speeds is that 2 second top speeds can easily be set in catapults. But that's more a problem of beginners and intermediates who crash a lot, and in particular with winging. I Nico had gotten the 41 knots in a crash, we surely would have seen some amazing crash footage. He probably would have bounced multiple times .

And, of course, 2 seconds is used as the "top speed" category in the GPS Team Challenge, and also tracked on GPS-speedsurfing.com (which, however, focuses on the 5x10 second category since it is less prone to artifacts and "lucky gusts".

I mean he's hitting over 39kts on 10 seconds and for half a km almost 38kts...Seems like he's consistently very fast just based on those, let alone the 2second peak.

It's a fairly typical split time across other sports. Back when I was speedskiing 180km/hr was thought of as very fast, and it took two seconds to go through the 100m trap. (Record now is 255.5 and I'm sure foil-sailing will experience a similar surge soon). We had no GPS so timing through a trap was state of the art but if we'd had it we would have used it. Good GPS units make two seconds an easy interval for peak speeds without generating a lot of spurious spikes. I'll use it for freeskiing and am often surprised when what felt fast wasn't and vice versa.

I think you are right, few people use the 2s. Most people who talk about speed just tell us the max recorded by their Apple watch.

awalkspoiled - you have led an interesting life. Also, you make an interesting point. 2s at his speeds is about 150 ft /81 m . That's most of the way across a football pitch. That's more than just a blip.

Man thats fast...huge effort. My fastest so far is 26, mind you choppy water and 900 front wing, but scared the brown stuff out of me. I just can't imagine 40 on a foil.

Exactly, and he wrote "challenge completed". He never claimed any records.

This is totally outrageous, right? I think you should start a petition in change.org to make it an international crime to post 2s top speeds.
