for the current overall 2007 PWA board rankings you might like to take a peek here:

www.pwaworldtour.com/index.php?id=423

Obviously its difficult / impossible for 1 brand to win everything!

Although Starboard got close last year:

1st PWA wave - Acids
1st PWASlalom 42 -iSONIC
1st PWA Super Cross - Stype
1st Constructor world champion
2nd PWA freestyle - Flare
1st PWA Formula - F160
1st PWA Formula European Championship

That was the result of an un equalled r and D programme and some extremely hard work by the Starboard development team.

Not even the most optimistic members of the Starboard family expect to see a repeat of this result in the near future - many of the other board cos have now put in a lot of effort to catch up - everyone gets better product because of this.

Domination of results has never been Starboard's aim - delivering better gear to every day riders and getting more people into the sport is their real objective. Many of the developments at the top end filter down to everyday product. Even Starts and Rios use technology that was intially used in the iSonic programme (side cuts etc)

Admittedly Starboard isnt doing as well this year in the wave category- keep in mind that in the past it was VERY rare for a team rider to ride production boards in the PWA. Starboard riders have been doing it for years - Scott Mckercher won his world title on a board that anybody could purchase off the shelf - that was a definite first. KP did the same thing last year on Acid 80s and 74s

To give credit where credit is due Kauli is definitely taking the sport to new levels - and some excellent design coming from those guys-out of curiousity - does anyone know if he rides production boards in competition?

People place too much importance on gear.

It's the rider that makes the difference.

Don't believe the hype!

Some of you guys love to knock it but I reckon having direct input from those working in the industry is what gives these forums that bit of extra sparkle.

Here we are! Call us and we are coming!

Kauli is riding custom boards and there is a reason for that :

You have to look back to the roots of Quatro; In early 90's, “ four” (quatro in spanish) of the most radical and motivated sailors in the word decided to start a new venture and try to create the ultimate wave board. So the all effect, money time and energy are spent in research and development.

Kauli in our days is the most respected and creative wave rider on tour. To be able to do that he has to spend lots of time in the water and in the shaping room with Keith Teboul (who is also shaping custom boards for most of the top world wavesailors that are riding Quatro board with other brand stickers on). Production is not able to close the gap on those guys’ innovations.

The shape of the production boards will be DIRECTLY inspired of the custom shapes, as radical and with the same lines, the only difference is that they are going to be released a bit later (eg : the twin fins, Kauli started to ride it last season, it's coming out now) Buying a Quatro or Goya production board is the closer you can get to a custom one.

Same thing is happening with Goya boards; they are replicas of Francisco's favourite custom boards; by the way, 2007 Australian Wave Champion Daniel Barry is riding Goya production boards.

See you out there,

Alberto
