I just bought a secondhand Aerotech 7m sail, and need a mast to go with it.

The stated luff is 486 - 490 cm, my extension can go up to 30 cm, and I plan to use it from 12-15 knots (anything much above 15 knots and I'll use a smaller sail) so don't need to really crank the downhaul on.

Would I be able to get away with a 460 mast? Is it a bit dodgy to use the top hole of an extension? It also says that it likes an IMCS of 29.5, how critical is this? The reason I'm asking is that newer sails tend to use smaller masts (I think!) so when I decide to replace the sail I don't want to have to get a 460 then as well. 7m is the biggest I ever plan on getting.

P.S. It also looks like there's a batten missing inside the zipper at the top of the sail, does anyone know anything about this?

hi nebbian, mate I had a similiar situation with my NP alpha 6.2

it needs a mast length of 464

I use a 430 mast (NP reccommend this) with a long chinook extension, this way, I can use 430 masts for all my sails, 5, 5.8, 6.2 and 6.7

however, I do have 2 extensions, 1 medium and 1 long.

seems to work fine, and will save you buying a 490.

nebs... Rig it on the potential masts and see... Generally, the smaller mast will most probably lead to a softer leech (a little less power and a little more performance off the wind). The longer mast (stiffer) will probably make for a stiffer rig, encourage early planing and better upwind performance... Has it got an adjustable head at 486, sounds as though it should rig on a 460.

Good luck...

The recommended mast is a 490.

I've only got a 430 mast, so no matter what I've got to buy a mast, but it would be nice to not have to buy yet another mast when I decide to upgrade down the track.

Interesting what you say, Pugwash, when I use this sail I want MAX POWER and upwind performance, I'm sick of slogging all the way back to the upwind mark watching the rest of the fleet lap me (vando knows what I'm talking about here). So I guess the answer is a 490, then either chop it down or get a new mast when I upgrade the sail down the track.

Think I've figured out the top batten, it looks like you put a batten down the luff tube and bend it around to the top of the sail, there are a couple of sleeves for this.

Anyone got an old 490 they want to flog to a good home?

Hey nebs I think 490 going to be to long by the time you add 100mm for the extension. What model is the sail.
