My issue is currently psychological but this may change as I am considering selling this board for a wave board.

I have an AHD Powerwave Board 262. I've checked the AHD site and found that it is a 2002 model. All good so far, but here's my issue -

The board is 58 cm wide consistent with a 262. The board however is 251 cm in length (straight line) and 255 cm long (tape along bottom of board following rocker line).

Just need to know whether I have the 86 or 94 litre board. How do AHD measure their boards...it doesn't make sense to me. I did shoot off an email to AHD for clarification but didn't receive a response.

Hope someone can help - ta

Maybe you washed yours in cold water and it shrunk?

Gidday Thommo,
I have the same board and found exactly the same thing. Puzzled the buggery out of me too!!!
I also emailed AHD and did get a reply but it was so long ago I cant exactly remember what they said. It did assure me that the board was 94 liters. After sailing it Im positive its the stated volume!!
Why the difference in stated stats I have no idea!!
Hope this helps,
Larko.

Thanks Larko - that's helpful. I bought a 2010 Fanatic Freewave 95 litre earlier this year. To add to the confusion was that fact that the fanatic felt like it had a lot more floatation. I think that may just be due to volume distribution for the AHD is a little more towards the middle of the board and little less under the feet.

Thanks once again...friggin strange though!

This might help (from Peterman's site)

www.peterman.dk/windsurf-boardvolume780-gb.htm

* Estimation of the volume of a board (empiric made - don't look for any logic):*

1. Measure the board where thickest.

2. Measure the circumference of the board with intervals of 20 cm (starting 10 cm from the stern).

3. The measured circumferences of the board are put into the formula: Circumference/221*20*thickness/13, which of course is calculated.

4. The sum of the results (from "3.") tells the volume of the board in liters.

Peterman provides a spreadsheet of some boards he measured, compared to the volumes quoted by the board maker (can't reproduce the spreadsheet here) but the figure for the Bics are pretty good: Bic say that for a 282, the volume was 107 L (108 L calculated) and for the 279, the quoted volume was 96 L (97 L calculated). For the 299, the quoted volume was 149 L (153 calculated).

Hope this doesn't hinder you!

Thanks WindmanV. I've been accused of being a little nerdy from time to time so this sort of thing is right up my alley. Appears the board is a 94 litre, but I will measure it up tomorrow just the same - ta.

Hi, Thommo,

After you have done the calculations, please let us know what the result is.

Thanks.

I got all fired up and gave it a try. Started measuring things up then got confused. Thanks for your help and time WindmanV but I will have to bail out on this one

You could measure the volume by submersing it in a tank (or a wheelie bin).

You'd have to take the bin to the beach and live with the shame of washing your bin in the sea... whilst looking pretty weird

Or put it in a swimming pool and see how much weight it takes to sink it.
Weight in kg = volume in litres.

So 1 litre will support 1 kg! I have friends with pools so I can do that. I also like the idea of putting it in tank and measuring the displacement. That said, I can't for the life of me think of how I will do it, i.e. where the heck I can get a tank that size.

Thank you everyone for your help. From what Larko has told me, I do feel reasonably comfortable that the board is 94 litres - ta.

My 99ltr AHD felt way smaller than my 100ltr RRD. About 10ltrs difference...

I hear you. It's difficult to compare oranges to apples but my 94 litre AHD seems to have alot less bouyoncy than my old Mistral flow 93 litre (bump and jump) and current Fantatic Freewave 95 litre...perhaps like the stated length, nothing's quite what it's meant to be
