This is just a warning to people who windsurf and kitesurf at Pelican Point.

A CALM officer approached me the other day (i wrk at peli) and gave me a brief description of sailing restrictions that will implied for ppl who sail here. i was told of plans to 'close-off' a large area of the kitesurfing area using yellow buoys in a bid to minimise our apparent 'disruption' of the wildlife along the waters edge. So dont be alarmed if you turn up one day to find markers in the water. However, ths maybe some time till it happens as the first plan is to erect a 'information' board somewhere on the grass where kiters usually rig up. i think so far, shrubs have already been placed along the wall (monday). Unless they've already been ripped out.

The big (~40') boat called "the Pelican" at the end of the channel will be a permanent wind break as well. Talked to the Dept of Planning and Infrastructure guy who OKed the mooring advising him that it is right in the path of where everyone launches from the sand bank to the right of the channel. When I explained this to him he was almost apologetic said he wished he had thought about that before but it was too late now as the owner had spent about 3 grand sinking a permanent fixture into the bottom.
On a positive note he thinks the boat is normally based up north and is only in Perth over the Xmas break. I hope that is true and Xmas doen't extend to all summer.

The owner of the boat asked us to keep an eye out for ths monster. He told us that they're only here for the Xmas break as you sed. A week into summer, and our max so far is no more than 25º....

i would be more concerned with whats going on beneath the water at peli point! has any one noticed the infestation of weed that is growing in the shallows predominately on the east side of the chanel?
you cant miss it, its almost un sailable in it and i have even noticed some kiters struggling in it! its green in colour and has very fine strands almost like hair.this is the first time i have ever seen it, and i have been sailing there for along time in fact this is my 24th summer and i am sure i havent seen it before!
it would be interesting to get a comment from a marine biologist or calm officer or the like as to what is the cause of the weed, what has changed in the river enviroment for this weed to start growing etc. as it stands that part of the 'point'is pretty much useless (to sail boarders) at the moment.( ummm- maybe the kiters planted it there, might have to purchase a weed fin!!)

snides, its definately worse this season, but was also around more than usual last season.

usually in september through november there are some periods of low tides. i think the sun kills off the weed/algae when this happens. i didnt really notice any extended low tides this season and i think this is contributing :(

They have been putting in some new pipes for retic near the car park. The drinking fountain wasn't working when i went there last week. I suspect it was just gunk in the pipes..thanks for clearing it :-))
