I went down to Narrabeen this morning, the charts were all in the green.....got there and rigged and there was literally less than 5 knots of wind.....worst windsurfing day ever....anyway...I also had some guy in a boat proceed to tell me what i was doing wrong. People always seem to assume you dont know how to sail if you try and go out in light winds.....has anyone else had an experience when they have been out mucing around in light winds and people assuem you dont know anything?

hee hee

yes..

Terrigal harbour...

on a one design...virtually no wind and using a small sail...went out the back of the breaks...no worries...coming back had to pump like hell not to end up on the rocks buteveryhting was cool on my side..

but some guy had to come up and say..."was gonna tell you when you rigged up that there wasnt enough wind...but by jingo young Skywalker you were able to get back...I didnt think you would when you left"

sure I would have looked underpowered to him..but I always sail one sail too small due to my health limitations,..I am light and capable,I was on a big floaty one design..easy,...I knew then what I was doing..but to everyone else I looked hopelessly underpowered.

What sh!ts me is when you have 3 or 4 very capable wavesailors out but it is really light so they are dogging (or 'ogging' as Relli would say) and some slalom sailor is planing past them back n forth.
Bystanders: "ooooh he's sooo goooood wow he's so fast".
If they ask how you went and you say 'not enough wind' they think you are a useless noob

I get that a lot as I practice in all winds.

I do all sort of freestyle in 20-25 knots on a 105l board (not always good, I grant you that), yet the next day I go out on an old board in 10 knots and people that saw me both days think I'm a beginner. Those are sailors too.

At Balmoral once I was sailing with the rig upside down for the fun of it, and some sailor comes to me and tells me I had the sail the wrong way around.

Ouf... serenity now !

The worst is when you take down your small board because you've heard it's going to pick up to 20kts plus.
After setting up and sitting around you figure you'll give it a try even though it's light and gusty.
When it's like this I struggle to even do a beach start as the board sinks like a rock and if I manage to get going and the wind drops off I'm left bobbing up and down trying to water start 50 mtrs off the beach.
I'm sure the bystanders figure I have no clue how to sail, they watch me- wondering if I need help, they dont realize there's no wind or even that windsurfers need wind.

There's something about Balmoral beach... I sailed there once earlier this year only to find that I planed all the way into shore into a wind shadow behind the rocks and then didn't have any wind to waterstart back and get into the channel! Doh! It happened at about 6.30pm on a nice evening with loads of people sitting on the beach looking at what would only seem like a complete novice trying to sail. I swam it back in the end as my board is of the sinker type........ Never sailed there since!

Thats the thing. People don't seem to realise that yo ucant help it that there is no wind, i mean sure, you can read forcasts, but it doesnt always work out. I had a friend ask "Do you still movie if thers no wind?"...which shows how people dont think about it

Maybe they know something you dont !

After all isnt part of the skill judging wind speed / sail size.

But seriously only just made it back into the bay I was sailing from on Monday - wind just dropped that little bit too much. But sailing with the water over your ankles is also a skill.

Can't draw a conclusion from one sail there... Balmoral has great steady on-shore winds in the N-E summers. N-E there almost never swings or falters. Mistake might have been to go on a southerly - of course this place has specialty winds like any other place. Or end-of-winter rather than summer, or later at night when the wind changes.

Hope you're not saying that people can't help as in not responsible for those outings. Or course it helps (a lot) to read forecast and use judgment, and then the % of useless trips to the beach decreases.

Another thing that helps is not go far for the hell of it. The closer, then the more "current" the wind info is, then the lesser chances of the wind dying. When I think the wind might flake out, I sail at the nearest possible on-shore spot, and I go as early as I can to take advantage.

I almost feel sorry for those poor saps here that will drive 2-3 hours for a vague hearsay the wind might be 1 knot better over there... They almost always come back bitches from those trips.

Yeah I love blasting past slogging wave sailors on my slalom gear. When the folks on the beach ask me, why aren't the other guys going? I tell them, they're just crap sailors.
