Hi all, just moved in shelley near the shelley foreshore, and it seemed like the wind was entering quite well when it's west/south west. Would be great to just walk down there for a sail every time it's possible !
I just don't know how shallow it is and if there are rocks or whatever. I know that some boats go around...
Has anyone tried windsurfing there?

Isn't Shelley one of the primary waterski areas on the river??? Deepwater point

Its surrounded by "relatively" tall hills so I would imagine the wind would be pretty swirly.

If you are around the corner, opposite the college (Aquinas I think) there is a submerged row of stumps, on the aquinas side, where the convicts used to drag timber barges along the river.

You can sail there. In fact thats where I learnt to sail! Its a bit gusty at times but we used to sail there in any direction. Have they taken out the wooden posts yet? I remember doing my first waterstart there. Back in the day there were 20 or more people on the water on windy days. Speed boards, wave boards, all sorts.

I also learnt to sail there and and continued to do so on most windy days from 1988 to about 1993. I would have been one of the 20 or so people that 'slowboat' was referring to. We were only young at the time and pretty much everone that used to sail there (except slowboat and myself) has since given up the sport. I very rarely see anyone sailing there these days.
The wind is normally weaker than other windsurfing parts of the river(Peli pt and Melville) and less consistent and as slowboat mentioned, quite gusty. But you can sail it in any direction - good for winter storms.
I used to know all of the shallow spots like the back of my hand. Basically, you can stand in most parts except for the channel in front of the toilet block on the Shelly side. As long as you don't venture downwind too far or go to close to the shore on the other side, you should be right.
Give it a stab and let us know what you think!

Cool, looks like the wind will be good on sunday! I went for a walk around the area yesterday and it looks awesome for freestyling, with the jetty as a photo post.
Yeah the wooden posts are still here but shouldn't be a problem, if u guys live around there come sailing! Looks like im the only one so far... been on the foreshore on a few windy days but didn't have a mast... havent seen anyone on the water.

YEAH it used to be a hoot back then especially in those honking NWers. I pretty much stopped sailing there about '90 because I discovered that bikes and trolleys were easy enough to make Melville a worthwhile effort. Then I got my license. The more wind the better, so I dont think I'll be going out of my way to get there...

Hey X-man
I used to learn there in the late 80s. I agree with the others, with wheels, the other places are better. However in a typical strong E'ly in summer the area along Salter Point Parade may be ok.
i might give it a go as i'm near Sandon Park in Manning.

sailed there a couple of times now, big holes in the wind and a lot of pumping but still ok considering its a 2 min walk from the house! Waiting for some STRONG wind to really have fun there
