Hi all, just moved in shelley near the shelley foreshore, and it seemed like the wind was entering quite well when it's west/south west. Would be great to just walk down there for a sail every time it's possible !
I just don't know how shallow it is and if there are rocks or whatever. I know that some boats go around...
Has anyone tried windsurfing there?

grumps, Shelley is just next to rossmoyne, canning river, i'll try sometime next week anyway as the wind kicks in

I also learnt to sail there and and continued to do so on most windy days from 1988 to about 1993. I would have been one of the 20 or so people that 'slowboat' was referring to. We were only young at the time and pretty much everone that used to sail there (except slowboat and myself) has since given up the sport. I very rarely see anyone sailing there these days.
The wind is normally weaker than other windsurfing parts of the river(Peli pt and Melville) and less consistent and as slowboat mentioned, quite gusty. But you can sail it in any direction - good for winter storms.
I used to know all of the shallow spots like the back of my hand. Basically, you can stand in most parts except for the channel in front of the toilet block on the Shelly side. As long as you don't venture downwind too far or go to close to the shore on the other side, you should be right.

YEAH it used to be a hoot back then especially in those honking NWers. I pretty much stopped sailing there about '90 because I discovered that bikes and trolleys were easy enough to make Melville a worthwhile effort. Then I got my license. The more wind the better, so I dont think I'll be going out of my way to get there...

sailed there a couple of times now, big holes in the wind and a lot of pumping but still ok considering its a 2 min walk from the house! Waiting for some STRONG wind to really have fun there
