Hey i have a few broken pieces of mast lying around and am looking at sticking them together so i can go sailing again.
Currently i have a top section that is 2m (19 mcs) long, a top section that is about 2.2 metres (21 mcs), a bottom section that is about 1.6 metres (19 mcs), and another bottom section that is 1m (19 mcs)long. They are all from the same style of skinny. I also have a broken carbon skinny extension. (At the base, so tubing is okay)
Basically i need to get one mast up to 4 metres. My options are:
1. 2.2 metre top section, 1.6 metre bottom section and tip extension, or
2. joining the two snapped bottom sections with the broken carbon skinny as a ferrule, and then cutting down to the correct size. This way, the reinforcing where the boom goes would sit at the right height, and i wouldnt have to use the stiffer mast piece.
Has anyone joined mast pieces back together and what have been the results. Would this affect the stiffness of the mast more than running the 21 mcs top piece. Thanks for any help

There is no structural reason it should not work. Just make should when you glass the cut sections that you taper the joins well so there is a good bond. Not sure how you will get the sleeve at the join to stick to the inside of the mast so that is does not crack under load.
Good luck. Not my idea of the most reliable rig.

Davo,
Should work fine but the weakness will be the sleeve, assuming it is full of holes being an old extension.
Better to use a mast tip for the joining sleeve.
Better still buy a new mast but this time a good brand.

To be honest mate i know we all hate it and you can see its possible but to save time energy and the inevatable swim you gonna have to spend and get a second hand or new one.
