Guys....well SA guys I have found the best speed sailing location in all of Aus.

Imagin a concreat barier were the wind blows over the top and underneath. The water was perfect downwind 10m from wall and still awsom 100m down wind. Its about 2.5km long and will work from SW through to SE.... it has to bee seen to be belived. go to google earth, look for the Twitchery barage running off Hindmarsh island, at most sth end of Lake alexandrina.

acces only by boat at the moment

Hey Ben,

You might want to trade your navman in for a garmin and upload your data to quantify this. I think the Sandy point boys may have the results on the board. I will be down at goolwa for the long weekend so I hope there is some wind.

The best spot is in my home town Dampier. In the mid 80's we used to sneak in and sail the huge salt ponds with our storm8's. My folks still live there and the wind was 60knots earlier this week. I would like to get a group together one year and head up for the cyclone season.

I congratulate you on your SA GREAT attitude but I think WA kicks our ass for sailing conditions as you know. What we should concentrate on is the real reason to be in this state. Farmers Union Iced Coffee....

Ben,
Should we organise to get out there? It looks like we could get pretty close. You will still need to get a proper GPS.

Yer sailed a few Milang to Goowla yatch races on the windsurfer /yatchs
good to see that web page.
good weekend that one.
That and the return race
Parties .
Me and lads got smashed up at Goowla after cutting sick on the island after a 3hour high speed burn out rampage on da big lawn sections.
Da ****en locals stopped the Ferry half way accross on our return at about 10pm after they gathered the base ball bats.I WONDERED WHY THE FERRY WAS TAKING SO FKEN LONG TO go across.
They smashed every pannel of the car and bloodyed our faces.
****s.
I oxyed the ferry cable the next night and had a great laugh.

reiffo ? who are ya ?
Have alredy been out there. You have to go on the goolwa, fresh water side. Because the salt coorong side is WAY to shallow 10cm in parts. We tied up on the Est side, were you can rig and launch on a grassy area.

THE WATER IS WAY FLAT. FLATEST I HAVE EVER SEEN IN OVER 20KTS. me and a few crew are waiting for an over 25kt day to realy test it out. On the gear we ride we wont break any records, baut any speedfreaks who get there will give it a good crack.

How do you know I have a navman ????? are you stalking me ???

Ben , you still need lots of wind for good speeds, but with it that flat you should be able to test the limits of low wind speedsailing as long as the turbulance downwind from the barrage is not too great.

Reiffo, those salt lakes are a tempation . I have wondered about the one at Pt Gregory that runs about 120-135 to the seabreeze. Any idea if it is sailable?

Hey Ben,

Looks the goods but how high is the wall and what do you mean about wind passing underneath?

Also what road do you take to get in there?

Yoyo,

I dont know much about the Pt Gregory one but the one I sailed was called pond 0 at dampier salt. This was about 1987 about 12 hours before a cyclone hit and I was out with about 5 other guys. We had to drive around locked gates to get in there and I nearly drowned because I was wearing my dads diving belt. I is also a great fishing spot. My family still lives their and I reckon I might have to sus it out next time I go back.

Ben,
I might have a look this weekend. Dimonds inlaws have a place on that side of the island so he might be up for it. I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers,
Chris

Ben, 25 is nice but not enough (unless you're Ian Fox :-)) If you want REAL speed, then 30-35 is needed. Still, let know how you go there. Good speed spots are few and far between.

Wot a spot! Drive onto the beach, rig up in dead calm beside the Macquarie Endeavor, 2 km of sand spit with 25 knots is a few steps away.

Sandy Point has some magic qualities. The westerly winds seem to be denser / more solid - as explained to me by Ian Fox. I didn't appreciate it until I tried it. In about 15-20 knots (I think) I felt marginally powered on a 6.2, I was getting 35knot peaks and 32.9knot 2 sec avg on a free ride board. There is just no resistance from the water, so smooth, the bank is quite steep so u can sail about a metre from the beach in glassy water. It's a unique experience, and I've sailed a lot of places. So despite the 1000klm+ trip I'm tempted to make the pilgrimage to speed week again this year. I can reccomend a sail at Sany Point for anyone.

Reiffo, did you head up for the cyclone?

Not sure how the police would take it if they saw you heading to the salt ponds with a board on the roof racks..
