Is anyone building their own boards in Sydney?
I've been making my own boards (Surf and Sailboards) for about 20 years, though not in the last 6 or so years. Now I have the urge to again. I used to sand for a surfboard company in Brookvale with the best wet layup laminator I've ever seen.
Things have changed pretty substantially since I made my last sailboard, epoxy was just coming into use and gaining popularity.
I've done sailboards with vinyl ester resin, stronger than polyester but a lot nastier, done a surfboard in carbon and kevlar which was unheard of at the time. Killed it in 8 foot.
Now I've got a few ideas that I want to try out so if anyone in Sydney is making their own boards I'd love to hear from them as to where's best to get supplies and the like.
Has anyone tried a planing chine? The first sailboard I made was 7'8" with a planing chine, imagine vee all the way from the nose or thereabouts with a flat section in the centre that tapered off to complete vee in the tail. Planed faster than anything else of the period, went faster than anything else because of the reduced water contact area and turned like a bugger because of a quite heavy vee in the tail. Loved it and still miss it sometimes.
Anyay I'd love to hear from any DIY people out there.
Glenn

bluejuice I can't thank you enough for that link.
I understand everything, or at least think that I do. Now I can ask some pertinent questions about recommended cloth weights when the time comes due. I've got some stuff to fab in preperation as I've got something of a grand plan in mind.
