Hey all,

Gday from an Aussie in Singapore...I was stoked to find this website; I didn't know whether there was any windsurfing going on in Oz at all, but it sounds like the place is going off!! Crappy wind here in Singa most of the time, even small sailors (ie lots of chinese guys) are using formula boards and sails up to 11m, to give you an idea. Right now the N-E Monsoon is blowing though, and it's time for the shortboards and 6m sails, but for how long is anybody's guess...

Anyway, I'm looking for advice...I'm planning a long trip to Vietnam later this year, anticipating strong winds and big chop, and wondering what kind of boards to take...already planning on taking a 130l freeride and 140l slalom. I weigh 85 kilos, my smallest sail is a 5.7, and I don't expect to have mastered waterstarts by the time I get there... Living in Singapore has screwed up my perspective when it comes to what is really "strong" wind...

Willy,

Spent some time over in Nam last year at Mui Ne between Ho Chi Min City and Nha Trang. There is a starboard centre there that had all the gear for hire. I'm heading back there this year around June.

Last year I mainly rode 90 - 110lt boards (EVO, S type, Sonics and carve) with sail sizes between 6.0 and 5.0 m, wind was a steady 20 - 25 kts. With the better wind you got crappy shorebreak but nothing too bad.

Warm water, cold-cheap beer, good food and very friendly people made it great time.

Should have fun

Don't know about anymore spots but I'm sure there is plenty...

Cheers

Thanks, Red...

A lot of my Singapore friends have been on short trips to Mui Ne, but I'm planning a long trip (like, 3 months plus) on a budget, hoping to find quiet, unspoilt spots to sail, so I'll take my own gear instead of hiring it. I suppose I can leave the big sails at home, that's great to know....
