I’m gearing up for an end of year trip
am looking for recommendations on double board bags that fit 2 boards plus 3-4sails/1 boom/2 masts

so far mfc and simmer are on my radar.

Are you flying, if so you'll struggle to keep the combined weight under 32 kgs.
3 kg Bag
13 kg 2 boards
13 kg 4 sails
2 kg boom
4 kg 2 masts
2 kg harness
2kg extension & mast base

I flew to Maui last year. The most I could fit in a flying objects roller bag was 1 foil board, 3 sails, 2 masts, 1 boom and waist harness without spreader bar. I could just close the zipper and it weighed 31 kg

Yep.. i’ll be taking harness in luggage and may be able to get 1 sail in another board bag… all the gear is carbon and light weight so a little under your figures but as you point out, it’s gonna be tight.. other option. Is just need to pay excess but agree, ideally undef 32kg the goal.

plus, i need gear to fit.. might buy a board at destination to use there and then bring home.

Airlines won’t take over 32kg per bag. So if you’re in the border it’s better to just pay extra for two bags and not stress about it and take it extra stuff. If it’s over 32 they’ll make you split into two checked bags anyway

I'd stay away from roller bags when flying as those bags are considerably heavier so you'll loose another kg or 2.

Generally your choice will be limited by what's available if your in Oz.

Also, have you considered renting if available at the destination? I know nothing beats having your own gear, but traveling light is quite nice and the money spent on new bags might cover the first 2 or 3 days of rental.

If i only take 3 sails in the double board bag i have total at 30kg so it’s close… max 64 across 2 bags?
2nd bag, (for me) will be single only. Possibly a day bag based on ben profitt’s travel video.

If you go roller bag, severne is the lightest.

Good call. Is lighter. Could be worth getting the race size to allow a bit more room for wave gear.
the simmer is 5kg. Severne is 4.3kg for the bigger bag.

Here's my random notes after years of flying with oversized crap. Biggest haul was 4 SUPs, some surf boards and two kits of RSX Olympic stuff, should've been arrested.

A single 30kg bag seriously sucks balls when flying and baggage handlers hate them more than me. Trying to deal with it in transfers, with rental cars, ughhh. I'm too old to start holidays with high intensity weightlifting sessions in and around airports, especially if it's busy.

Chose an airline that has good rates for two accompanying bags of SPORTS EQUIPMENT to and from. Pre book so they know it's coming.

1 X board bag with board + soft stuff (towel, wettie, etc..., light weight cardboard/foam on rails, nose and tail). This will nicely sit on top of a wheeled quiver bag with everything else to all be capable of being dragged around.
I'm usually 1@12-15kg and 1@15-20kg.

Back pack for carry-on loaded with clothes and essentials. No hardware, fins, etc... in the backpack, security wont be happy.

All easily mobile and won't do your back in. And always travel with a pair of roof rack// board ties, can strap big bags to airport trolleys for even easier movement. If worried about the weight, what can you buy cheaply at the other end and leave/give away/sell when you leave?

Get to the airport early, figure out where the oversized bag drop is and then go to the bar for a brekkie beer.

Are you suggesting 2 bags per person? 1 for boards and one for quiver. That sounds like a plan.. Bags are expensive tho so need to plan ahead .

There is also parcel send companies that claim to be cheaper than the Airlines. Jetta??

Yep. Two bags per person, 1 board bag and one rolling quiver bag. I usually will fly with no more than a board, 3 sails, 2 masts, 1 boom and keep the other stuff to a minimum. If I need something else I'll beg, borrow, rent etc... at the destination. If it's really remote I'll make sure my kit is near new and have something for small holes.

Unsure of third party services. I do moderate amounts of import/export at work and I would stick to taking my kit with me on the plane. The amount of busted, pilfered, late deliveries I deal with says 'buyer beware'.

I do one oversized board bag that takes Waveboard mast boom wetties towels etc and second bag is a an oversized surfboard bag with surfboard and two or three sails

I agree keep it around 20kg ish it’s all way easier

where are you flying from? Brisbane oversized is right next to check in terminals same as Perth

It’s not hard but can be a pain in the a***
I once flew from London to Oman with 90kg gear was moving home after many years and got stung a thousand pounds and a weeks delay in gear lost one week sailing out of a six week trip.

What airline are you planning to fly? As a rule of thumb for non airline status passengers:
- all airlines have a 32kg weight limit for checked luggage (remember you boards, sails, wetsuit etc weight a lot more even when just damp)
- via the US most full service airlines include 2x32kgs in the ticket (except for Jetstar)
- some airlines only include one bag in the allowance make you pay extra for each additional bag.
- some airlines now have baggage length limitation on specific flights due to aircraft limitations

I would recommend you check on this before you make a booking. I have heard of people paying more at the airport for excess charges than they paid for the ticket. Also check on the rules for both inbound and outbound segments. I once had problems with British Airways trying to get my gear back to Europe. They had bizarre rule in the past where they would take boards to Australia but not reverse if you had a connecting flight to Central Europe out of London. I ended having to airfreight my gear back.

If you have to buy a board bag keep en eye on Seabreeze. I have bought a couple of really good bags there in the past. Be ware of the overall weight of the bags. I have two NP double board bags with wheel that are great but they weight 5.9kg each. I also have a Severne triple bag with no wheels which weighs less than 3kgs. That said the best bag I have is a two compartment bag from ProLimit which holds 1 board plus 1mast, 2 sails, 1 boom, extensions harness etc and still comes in under 32kg.

I would pack each bag to be no more than 30kgs to allow for water logging.

Flying with gear is a complete pain in the arse. Especially when you have to manhandle luggage from international baggage collection through customs and then onto a different and distant domestic terminal ( eg Honolulu).

Fantastic advice from everyone.. has given me clear direction.

Travel will be brisbane to perth for 2 people..looking like 2x board bags, a double and a single plus my existing quiver bag should get me there and keep weights below 20kg per bag. i’m ok travelling with bags. Agree it’s part of the adventure… 💪

alls i need now is a spring season full of port tack conditions so i’m not a kook when i arrive;

I tore my rotator cuff loading my 30kg roller bag onto the oversized scanner at Melbourne airport back in 2017. Im so careful now.

Totally agreed with the comments above. Buy an extra bag and keep them in the 20-23kg range max.

One more thing. Beware when flying domestic, especially on Jetstar as they containerise on a lot of routes meaning there is length limit in regards to bags. For Jetstar the limit is usually 190cm.

Try contacting Surf Aids at Byron Bay. They made me a custom bag a couple of years ago at a very reasonable price and excellent quality. 😎

I once had a few sails shipped to WA from Sydney with e-go (I think). I wrapped three or four sails up together to form one big round bundle and shipped it there. It was cheaper at the time, although I think half the reason to do it was that I could get it delivered to a place in Perth and this meant it was less stuff to take on the plane.

The sails wrapped up together was pretty secure and I guess short of a puncture, they would be pretty durable. I think I also had insurance.

Perth Airport used to make availale a large flat-bed trolley to carry gear on. Apparently it was meant for bands and the like with a lot of heavy gear, but they would lend it out for our windsurfing gear. They stopped doing it after a while which was a real shame as it made things so much easier.
