Took a Jp Freeride 150 with North 7.0 out on Narrabeen today.....
I found it didnt have as much power as i expected, probably because i had the outhaul in as tight as it would go just to get it rigged properly, as im a noob.
...... but didnt want to go up and be like "anyone here from seabreeze.com"

Heaps more downhaul.
With modern sails, if you have the downhaul right, you hardly need any outhaul because the shape is already there
outhaul will unshape & depower the sail

re seabreeze...just ask

by the way, the downhaul was down as to the end of the mast, it felt like the outhaul had to be tight so the battens would be able to get around the mast when coming about

Hi Lalalamort,

I have a North race sail. It takes a lot of downhaul of get it right. The amount is more than I can physically do without straining myself. With a crank tool its fairly easy to get the amount of downhaul required. Check out the other thread of North rigging. They have a special mast extension with inbuilt crank.

I didn't go sailing this afternoon as it looked like a storm was brewing. However the storm failed to perculate.

A friend of mine had a 7.5 Neil Pryde V8 out on Sunday and he really liked it. There will be many summer days with a seabreeze of around 12 to 15 knots and a 7.5 will be the right size.

In regards to boards, though $1100 is a lot of money for a board I reckon its worth it. Put 90% of your money into a board and rig you will use 90% of the time. For Sydney that means a board of 130 to 150 litres in volume and a mast, boom and sail of around 7.5 meters in size with a 50 cm fin.

Try your old mast with a recent sail. If it doesn't rig right then you will have to spring out for a mast. An option is to go with a brand like Loft. You buy them online and they seem reasonably priced.

Hopefully we can meet up soon and you can have a go of my gear. I sailed on Sunday and posted my sailing here:

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll try that NP V8 7.5 on my old, old board and see how it goes.

Whats everyones opinion about buying a sail before you've tested it.....is that what people generally do for new sails, because otherwise it would be considered used?...is this a safe thing to do for used sails?

I sailed with a North 7.0m on monday and was wondering if it would be safe to by a similar sail say a NP V8 7.5m without testing it.

I've just been using like 20 year old sails in the past so i assume the diferences in how modern sails feel compared to my old sails will be small

Lalalamort I feel like I have to add a bit of my personal advice here as I think you are being led down the wrong path by a particular person here with more opinions on things than I have had hot dinners.
I am also 75 kg's and have been sailing for over 25 years. I had only had pre millenium sails and boards up until about 18 months ago. The difference between the older boards such as yours and the newer boards is a massive amount. The same goes for the sails, even moreso! The wind range you can now take modern sails out in is pretty incredible. Although I would love to see you try and hold that 7.0m in more than 25 knots By that kind of wind strength I'm down to my 5.0m and fully powered up. And also the quickness with how modern boards can get up and plane compared to oldies is also monumental. Do not for one minute think that a newer board such as the JP you rode or the North sail are in any way close to what you have had in the past. For your weight I would NEVER recommend a board of the volume being mooted about on here. My all day every day board is a Fanatic Falcon slalom of 90 litres and in 12 knots I am planing with a 6.7m race sail.
Please, go back to Wind Surf and Snow and speak with the guys there. Get them to show you how to rig your gear right and I am sure you will be amazed at the difference in performance. New gear is very sensitive to correct setup and can be the difference between planing and having fun or slogging and cursing the people around you going faster. Don't put a modern sail on an old mast, it won't work.
I wouldn't want to see you on a modern board of anymore volume than 105-110 litres considering your weight and I think a 6.5 to 7.0m sail will be fine for most Sydney conditions.
I stress this is only MY opinion but please, go and listen to some experts. That's what the shop is there for.
Good sailing mate

Thanks for advice. However, I didnt explain what i meant about hthe sails properly. What i meant to say was..."I dont think there will be much difference between different types/brands of modern sails, compared to the huge difference between old sails and modern sails." So, modern sails will seem much alike, compared to my old sail.

The point you make about the holding the 7.0m sail in over 25 knots is a good point. Im heading into Windsurfnsnow AGAIN tomorrow...hopefully for the last time. I may for the time being stick with my old board. Might put a new fin on it. I mean, obviously modern boards are better, but im not sure for the level I'm at whether they are like $1000 better. But yeh, i think tomorrow I'll buy the 7.0m for sure.
