With the awesome wind in perth today I managed to break my boom. I only have one, it's an old aluminium boom and snapped through one of the extension holes. I was wondering if anybody has had any luck with placing an ali sleeve inside and riviting it together? Can anyone think of any possible problems with this? Ideally I would like to upgrade but the wallet is empty and so is the bank account so I'm stuck with what I have, it is good enough for the time being anyway.

Many thanks,

Andy

have a look at the other holes nearby, if any of them have cracks coming from them, it's only going to go again. Most booms have the extension holes down to let water run out, unfortunately this puts the holes under tension when sailing, if you drill a small hole at the back of the boom on the other side, (to let any water out), you can turn the extension over, so that the holes are up and in compression when sailing. This makes them last a lot longer! You may find your closest windsurfing shop has a box of old junk, including bits of old booms, that's the way I'd go.

Ahhh.

I like it Decrepit, good point about them being in tension and compression. Never thought about that before.
Always pays to have boom arms as short as possible. But this means having a couple of booms.

I never actually thought there was that much presure on a boom, but I suppose that when there is my 88kg hanging off of it (plus a wetsuit full of water and pee) that is a lot of stress. That was my first day in winds over 20kts and it was worth the breakage.

Where abouts do you live Drowny?

I got a spare boom you can borrow to get you out of trouble, if you need.

I live in Singleton near Mandurah.

Thanks Grinch, I'm in the opposite direction. I'm in Craigie in the northern Suburbs Thanks for the offer though. Extremely kind. I should hopefully have one sorted by the time I get another chance to need it anyway. Thanks for all the generous offers. Will hopefully be knocking on Raggys door with a six pack.

I never actually thought there was that much pressure on a boom, but

Try a flat mast high landing hooked in, or a mega catapult at speed.
I've bent the boom arm and ripped my harness apart in one of those, and I'm under 70kg

Ratty a REAL sailor (eg Finian) doesn't need but one side of a set of booms. Just sail clew first out, and luff first in for dtl, or vice versa (mount the boom upside down) for jumping.

LOL Thanks NotWal, so I don't really need a new boom Maybe I should just toughen up and get rid of the boom altogether and just hold the mast in one hand and the clew in the other.
