How much is "no wind" to you ?

Technically, no wind = zero wind. If that's the case, I feel for you.

Many people say "no wind" when it's sub 10-15-20 knots, depending on the guy. By that they often mean and say "I'm too good for that wind" - mmmh I've never seen someone TOO good, but met a great very many of them saying so.

Or they say I don't have big enough a sail to go out in such-such wind - which is a choice per se.

Or they say I get bored if it's not such-and-such - which I would also call a choice. Or they say 11-knots and below is for beginners only - but those who say that haven't seen some of the advanced freestyle on the Web. Or they say "I do only performance sailing" - and then are they really that good international racers?

Not trying to get under your skin, just wondering: is there really no wind? Being from Sydney, I used not to go out under 10-11 knots. Now living in somewhere nowhere inland, with flaky winds and a short season, my threshold is now under say 7 knots. I simply got an old wrecker and do flatwater freestyle when not enough for shorties.

Surprising how it's all relative, huh?

Just ranting, there is no wind today ;)

for me no wind is below 7 knots. looks like i'll be getting the formula board out this weekend sometime as the forecast is definatley not looking promising as greg says.

I have an old book 1982 called "this is freestyle Windsurfing" by Peter van Wagensveld. All the tricks are on huge wallys. They dont do em like that anymore. Try a forward somersault through the boom, or Mast climbing !!!! It finishes with a section on hydofoils(the future of windsurfing??) Pictured is a huge board with front and rear hydrofoils similar to the old sydney ferry ones.

I know of the book, more clownesque than serious. Them's clown tricks. Nobody ever landed the forward trick in a comp, including him. I know, I was on the scene then. And mast climbing goes nowhere of course. Quoting this book would be like quoting Stewie ;)

The real tough stuff is all on the rail anyways. In terms of books, you could have done better, ie. Gary Everole. At least he could do thems tricks (as I on my Tubes), the pictures weren't simply missed tricks on the way to swimming.

Believe it or not, that kind of freestyle keeps one in shape. It's that, or sailing perhaps only 1/4 of the summer here. Living inland sucks, my only other experience had been on that pond Canberra before.

Ok guys, no more taking the p_ss outa me....
I think when I wrote this I was sh_t off that I had to take the misses and M-in-law up to Gympie for the weekend, Just got back and wondering what Monday will bring. Looks like there was some wind after all!!!
Like all the comments re sailing in lighter winds though. No I'm not a real competent sailor, just like good wind.

Sorry mate, but then there might have been wind, and it's a choice.

Apologies to be picky, but I'm surrounded by "20 knots or there is no wind" people, drives me crazy. Nobody that good.
