Well just bought my first board and am looking forward to getting back into windsurfing after about 12 years. Raced a Windsurfer OD many years ago inland, but have just picked up a Bombora 282 with Gaastra harness and main (size ?) quiet cheap. Plan is to get a feel for it again, spend a little time on it, then progress to a more modern board with a view to much shorter boards.

So any body got any advice????

How many ltrs is the 282
What sail sizes should I be looking at (weight - 72kg)
What year range were these boards built.
Is there a Bombora web site or are they a discontinued manufacturer.

Cheers
Stephen

the board will probably be about 100-110 litres, hard blowmoulded plastic board, quite heavy compared to todays boards. Should be good enough to get you back into it once you have a go on some modern gear you'll wonder what you were doing riding what u got, but make do with it till you get your sea legs back. i don't think any have been manufactured since mid 90's. were fairly popular here in aus tho

im 70 kilos, and my sail sizes are 3.8(for 35 knotts) 4.8 (25 knotts) 5( for 20 knotts) 5.4 (for 20 knotts too) and 6.8 for 12 knotts, but for some one who is getting the feel i woulnd t go past a nice 5 meater, but make sure it is a 2002 model or higher, nice and spongy but locks in the wind, cant go rong, you will be using this in about 10 knotts to begin with just to get used to the water again, than to about 20, once your plaining ok than i would go up a size, maby to a 6, than for the new sezon i would go for a nice wave sail about 4.5 to 4.8

I'm trying to get back after 17 years and went for for first sale the other week and found out that the old windaction wave board I used to float on is now a sinker thanks to my extra 10kg. Some changes to design I don't understand yet like how can the new wide boards still be good in high winds and some of the new boards look like my old bombora tri-fin? Still, look at how the speed record has increased so I'll be going for new gear.

At my grandparents place theres an old wooden boom in the rafters of the shed. Not sure how old but very. We also got a aliminium boom and an old 1 piece fiberglass mast with a triangle sail. + some ancient Ten Cate boards. I reckon i could just about start a museum on my own .

Anyway i have four sails. A 5.0, 5.8, 6.5 and a 7.0. I find i'm prity set for all conditions except for when it gets abouve 30 then the 5.0 gets a bit out of control. Even with absolute full downhaul. My two smaller sails are wave sails and two larger ones are freeride/race sails. There all 2002 or later except for the 5.0. But i have found it to be way way a head of its time. Its a 2000 Neilpryde Core and probably our second nicest sail (behind a 2004 or 5 GTX). Boards i mainly use range from 98L to 158L.

With this gear i find i'm set for all conditions. The only time i cant sail is in virtually nothing when i would need a 10m sail to get me up. I think it's deffently a safe bet gettin about a 5m sail. Thats the first sail my brother and i got and its lasted well. After that we got the 6.5 then 5.8 and finally the 7.0. But i think Edge is right going with about a 5.
