Brad Andersen passed away this morning aged 51.

A legendary figure among the Long Reef sailing crew, and always your guarantee that you would not be sailing alone.

Any hint of wind would see him perched up on the hill in the Long Reef car park in his truck; thermos of tea in one hand and walkie-talkie in the other listening to live weather updates.
No matter how grim the forecast was, it was always worth heading down to Longy for a chat with Brad.

He could bust out forward loops that would put sailors half his age to shame, and could tell a joke to make the politically-correct brigade pass out.

Every local spot needs a Brad Andersen in their ranks, yet so few are lucky enough to have one.
We had the one and only, and there will never be another.

Long Reef has lost its most colourful character.

Great sailor. Great bloke. Great friend

On behalf of the Long Reef sailors, our thoughts go out to his family.

Sorry to hear that brad has moved on. A great guy that will be sorely missed by all that knew him and even more those that sailed with him. Hope to be sailing as well as he was when i get to his age. Learned to loop watch brad and glovey closely out the corner of my eye and learnt other invalueable lessons from brad such as - if you stuck at the beach and theres no wind, areldite a $1 coin to ground and then sit back for hours of free entertainment as passer bys trip to pick it up!
Thanks for years of entertainment brad, rest in peace mate.
Regards to all

my sincere condolences to brads family.

brad was a real bloke who i was privileged to have spent time with over many years, usually at wavesailing comps like mambo.
always high spirited and adventurous (4WDing through tracks back from the pambula pub at mambo with a trayful of us drunken wavesailors) and a bloody great wavesailor who got better the older he got!!!
his character will be sorely missed by anyone who spent time with him.
good onya brad thanks for the memories. you put a smile on everyones dial.

Didn't know him well and he couldn't remember my name - but he was a big inspiration. One of these days I'm going to pull a big forward, and I'll be thinking of him.

That's perfectly put qwerty - Brad was a great bloke and as much of a legend in the Long Reef carpark as he was on the water. He was always good for an on-the-fly repair and a tale and his big lumbering truck was always a welcome sight when you thought you were going to be the only one out.

The last time I sailed with him it was blowing its nuts off and all the crew - Brad included - were struggling to keep our boards glued to the water. Real survival conditions. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw Brad suddenly peel off downwind, accelerate like a mad man and then pull a huge forward. I'll never forget it.

Bon voyage, Brad. You were an inspiration.

Long Reef sessions will not be the same without Brad and his truck. I sailed with him only a few weeks ago up at Box Head which is a spot he introduced me to. I can't believe he is no longer with us.

When I started sailing long reef many years ago he was the first local to come up and chat with me making me feel welcome to my new country - I suppose since then I've grown in to a local and now it is up to the rest of us to welcome the new sailors we see - that is what he would have done.

It is really great to see so many nice things being said about a truly exceptional character. He will be sadly missed, not only because he was a wave sailing legend, and an icon on the northern beaches, but also because of his warm, generous and caring nature. Brad always had time to have a chat to anyone. And if you had a problem he would always want to offer you suggestions, and would not be happy until he could solve it for you, even if he only just met you.

Brad loved life, and especially if it involved wind surfing. Besides Brad's obvious love for his family, wave sailing was without doubt his biggest passion in life. As someone else commented, if you wanted to go for a sail and you wanted company you could rely on Brad to either already be there or join you without too much persuasion.

I believe sailing helped Brad block out his illness and survive for so much longer than he was told he would by the doctors. He refused to give in, and sailed right upto a month ago. Thats how strong sailing obsession can be.

Brad always saw the good in everyone and every situation, and rarely had a harsh word to say about anyone (with the exception of the Warringah Council rangers). Many would recall Brad as someone who was always trying to see the lighter side of life. He loved playing practical jokes and having a good laugh. If you visited his house and weren't aware, you would be squirted by water from his front door bell, etc. It was things like that which set Brad apart and made him the colourful and loveable character that he was.

I personally have lost a great mate, with whom I shared a common passion, and with whom I had many a fun time. I am truly sadened by his passing, but am thankful that I had the fortune to have known him, and that his end was not full of pain and suffering.

Cheers Mate !!

Brad was a unique character who lived his life to the fullest and was always around to have a chat to or share a joke with or catch a wave with at his beloved Long Reef.

I have fond memories of sailing at Longy, looking up at the carpark and seeing his truck parked on the hill and the giving me a sense of being on the water with my mates.

Brad - sailing will not be the same without you

I will miss him greatly and if I could have even half his enthusiasm for life and spirit for living then I would be happy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children and hope they remember Brad for who he was - a great Aussie bloke

Sincere condolences to Brads family, really a great loss for us all.

Brad - he did it all, great husband, great dad, great mate. He was a great sailor and a central person that brought the Long Reef wavesailing community together. The friendship, encouragement, spare parts, practical jokes, we are gonna miss them all. I really cannot believe we are not going to see Brad on the water or driving around in the truck.

Brad also knew pain and suffering, he battled and it frustrated him but he wasnt one to complain. He persevered and kept doing what he loved and in doing so left us all an example.

Sadly, farewell to the Mayor of Longy - RobJ

Winds-up....

Before the web there was a group of keen sailboarders on the northern beaches who had a CB call sign to bring them together when conditions were working.

Brad was one of those guys and I was one of his mates and this was our call sign.

If there was a larrikin in the group it was Brad and if there was an inspiration it was Brad.

"Winds-up" I'll miss you mate.

Julian

I find it hard to beleive Brad has gone. To me, as I i'm sure with most, he was always such an inspiration. No matter what, he always bounced back, a truly larger than life charater.

After reading down through all the messages, it shows that Brad will be greatly missed and every body had it spot on.

Chubb you summed it up. I can't imagine heading to Long Reef on a Big Day and not seeing Brad's truck on top of the hill.

I will miss those cold winter days sitting in the truck and Brad saying it will be here soon its 25 knots at the airport.

I too feel that I have lost a good friend.

All my condolences go to Brad's family and if you need anything we are just a phone call away.

Kevin, Kerri-Lee and Madeleine Claret

He loved above all and most dearly Julie, Natalie, Jake and Carly.

I am sure he has found Merl, driven off in the Kingswood and is rigging up in the most heavenly spot as we speak.

Gone are the days!!

Hi All,

A very sad time....

Brad's funeral is at 11 am Monday 7th May at Magnolia Chapel at Macquarie Park Crematorium on the corner of Delhi Rd and Plassey Rd North Ryde about 2km up the road from Northern Suburbs Crematorium.

"Dress as you feel"- it was suggested to wear bright Hawaiin shirt or such.

The family requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Sydney Cancer Centre Foundation.

He will be sadly missed by us all......

First time I met Brad was when a group of windsurfers at Longy carpark decided to drive up and check Makaha. I tagged along and was walking with Brad past a cliff warning sign when he suddenly whipped out a permanent marker and promptly graffitied the sign with a picture of someone being pushed off. He and I both laughed and I think he made me laugh every time I saw him after that.
Thanks Brad, miss you mate.

One of the first times I walked up to the Headland at Longy I was with Brad and he told me that he had brought back a rock from Maui and had buried it near the steps as you come out facing north from the carpark. Can anyone one shed some light on that one? I think he got it when he went with Glovey??Chubby?? You must know something about that one?

I've known Brad for more than 20 years and I sailed for many years. He was always at Longy without fail listening to his transister weather reports coming from the airport. He was so enthusiastic and passionate about his windsurfing as he was with life. My fond early memories are of Brad sitting in his shaggin' wagon with his beloved Merle and a cup of hot tea waiting for the wind to arrive. He would keep me amused telling me his stories about his capers and he always made me feel good and I would laugh hysterically. The conditions were not as ideal for me so he and Glovey introduced me to mountain bike riding so thanks for that mate as that is now my passion and because of you Brad I became Australian champion and have met heaps of good blokes just like you. In recent times you visited me in the bike shop which I now work and you put a smile on all our dials with your endless love of life. I will be forever grateful for knowing you mate. Our thoughts are with Julie & the kids - you must be so proud of Brad when reading all these messages! A truly inspirational person, although a larrikin! Troy Rowell (and Lorna)

So many of us share similar memories of Brad - his impact on each member of the northern beaches windsurfing community has been universal and long lasting. At times a mischievous rouge but always a gentleman who shared his love of windsurfing and living life. Much respect and good memories

G'day all. My names Ben and i just thought that i would share some comments about Bradley.

Brad was and always will be an inspiration.

I can remember the day I met him - was at Narrabean Lake and i was learning to sail. Brad was quite helpful in helping me rig-up and offered a few sailing pointers. This was so typical of Brad - so forth write and willing for friendship, he was so very friendly.

My fondest memory of Brad will always be him with his arms crossed taking a break standing by his kit on the beach - always willing to have a yarn about one thing or another. The amazing thing was that all this time he was battling his illness but never showed it - he never let it get the better of him.

His sailing spoke for itself. Forwards, duck gibes etc - he did em all with ease, but more than this he loved the sport and could always be found at Longy etc.

Rest In Peace Brad. You will always be remembered.
