some...

There were about 40 sailors for the race and quite a few spectators. Wind was about 13-16 knots with a few largish holes down to about 10 knots; direction was quite on-shore, making the beacon a bit of a slog upwind. About an hour before the race, it looked like 6m was going to be the size, but it did back off somewhat before most people had rigged.

Due to the on-shore wind, it would have probably required at least one tack for even the formula sailors to reach the beacon, so the course was altered so that the free-riders could make the mark on one tack. The idea was that the support boat (the boat with the flag, as opposed to the rest of the fishing boats) was the new target, ie: sail around the buoy nearest to the boat.

Of course you cant actually see the boat, until you are within 1-2km of it... so the leaders spent quite a bit of their leg sailing "somewhere over there"...!

However the course change caused confusion - the leaders sailed out to where they thought the buoy was - except that it was missing a boat..! The remaining pack actually sailed out to the boat - which turned out to still be a bit of a slog upwind - even so, most people were only needed a single tack to make the mark. The direction back to the beach was quite good with a fast downwind run.

Upon getting back to the beach, we found out that the boat had gone to the wrong mark - which was about an extra 500m upwind and about an extra 1.5kms further out of the mark that the leaders were aiming for (but still not as far/upwind as the beacon). So some guys finished the race in under 10mins, while the guys that went to the boat got back in under 20mins. The last guys taking about 45 mins.

The start was quite spectacular with us racing down the beach to pick the gear off the water's edge (le-mans ?). I'd expect SHQ to have something posted on their website within the next few days. And yay to the girls - two entered this year.

Personally: last year I think I came second last - this year I was on formula (160cm + 9.5m) so I did much better, overtaking most people while they were stuck on the start line. The way out was an interesting ride - managed to get airborne a few times (not on purpose) as the swell lined up nicely, with one particular oh-s**t moment at about 4ft in the air.

SHQ do a pretty good job and its a fun atmosphere - especially when Mike Meyers telss his stories...

If you ask me the results of this race are a joke. As a spectator watching the event, the instructions were that the boat was the marker and the racers were to sail out and around the boat which couldnt be seen from the beach! There were clear instructions of what the boat looked like so there were no mistakes.
Why would anyone that was not from SHQ think to jybe around a bouy that was no-where near the boat and only 5 mins away from the beach.
The racers that choose to ignore instructions given to all competitors and do what only a select number of competitors had discussed between themselves, and then be given places is a joke!!

It is disappointing to see that SHQ is making out like the competitors that sailed out to the boat did the wrong thing, when they were following the instructions given at the briefing. Which i thought was the purpose of briefings at races, to give all racers the same and correct information.

[ Just because some people got confused and sailed out further to the boat, and others followed them.

Who Cares!!!! The race is all about having fun!!!

Clearly there was confusion but I don't think it was anyones fault. Obviously everyone thought they were doing the correct course. I think it was great that the confusion was acknowledged by awarding two sets of results one for each course - rather than just pissing off half the competitors by disqualifying them. I distinctly heard at the briefing to sail around the boat then it was changed to sail around the buoy but it was all pretty casual so it would have been easy for anyone to misinterpret what the actual course was - clearly some people heard boat and others heard buoy - both were said so the confusion is understandable!

If people criticise the organisers of events like this then there'll be no events. I think most people had a good time as is the spirit of the race and SHQ along with Naish and the other sponsors should be thanked for their hard work, initiative and generosity in putting together an event with a great atmosphere and generous prizes.

Well done SHQ and congratulations Joel and Luke you were both clearly the fastest on the water so I think it was the right result in the end anyway.

Looking forward to the next one!

Mate - you've got those push loops! I was just downwind of you when you hit a waist high ramp and somehow launched well over mast high - looked totally SICK - you were so close, just a bit of over rotation! Hardcore move for the bay!

Please don,t slag off SHQ for the confusion this year . It is absolutely awesome that they organise this event year after year , and to pay out on them is totally non productive . The confusion actually arose from them trying to make the course more suitable for everybody , not just guy,s on race gear.
Sure , I was myself pissed off when I got the the beach and told I sailed the wrong course and that I should have gone around the red mark ( which by the way was yellow), but I had lots of adrenalin pumping at the time. I was completely over it 2 minutes later .It really didn,t matter .
Events like this should be welcomed and supported . Sure mistakes are made sometimes , but these events are run by humans , one's who give up there time for the enjoyment of others .
For the record , I reckon I went the right way ! Ha !!!

Looks like a great event. Photos look great on www.wv.org.au/

Maybe the top Vic speed guys could race at the Slalom Nationals next year?
Maybe it is time Victoria held the Slalom Nationals?...Just a thought?

Seriously, this event looked great regardless of the confusion....

I understand the frustrations/confusion of others with what was said and what happened, but at the end of the day its entireley upto you to make a decission on what you think is the best 'Course of Action' given what is said at the briefing and what unfolds on the water.

I was slow off the beach and made the error of following the leaders but as aproaching the short mark noticed the boat with flag upwind and way further out with Matt heading towards it. So it was at that point I thought I had not really sailed all that far and the fact that the B to B is renowned for being a moderate distance race and turning back so close to shore seemed not right to me.

So at the end of the day I had fun, had a go at riding a Formula (thanks Martin), had a social beer and a 'Sandy Sautayed Meat Sandwich' (Wally you must of got into the beers early) still tasted good though.

Anyway good to see some passion for the sport displayed, makes it interesting.

So some pointers for Next years race that will help, the rounding mark be it a boat should have a small trainer kite off the back of it, this would be easy to see as elevated high up. They do this in the Ledge to Lano race off the back of Cray boats I think and can be seen from geat distances just like the beacon.
Failing that a 5m mast at least with a dark coloured flag to help see as the white one blended in with the horizon on Sunday.

Moving along...
and the Session at Rickets last night was a ripper with some great moves from backies, pushies to even a one handed forward which I have not seen done for a while there. Good to see all pushing hard and progressing.
Sail size ranged from 3.7 to 5.8 ,, yeah I was a bit over cooked but managed to get a couple of peak speeds just under 32kts, nuts for how choppy/wavey it was.

Cheers
