You may want to check out GPS-speedsurfing.com there's plenty of fact and opinion on the forum.
The Garmin fortrex 201 is one of the most popular for recording tracks hence speed but they do not display map files.
Good luck and good speeds.

I'm new to GPS as well, recently got the Foretrex 101 as some concerns re the rechargable batteries in the 201 . Very easy to setup folowing instructions on GPS Speedsurfing site, and a no brainer to use
www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx

Johhny Appleseed was very helpful and had all the accessories such as an aquapac which is also recommended.

hi goldcoastmoz,

i have the foretrex 101 which was recommended by most of the local guys. works a treat. uses standard AAA batteries which is better than rechargable.

definately spend the extra money on the aqua pac. i got the normal one which is a pain in the but. try and get one of the ones that can be strapped to your arm. i end up having to use gaf tape to hold mine on.

also, and i am not sure if you can but try and get a usb cable for it rather than the serial cable. usb would be so much easier. i am not sure if you can get usb but try at least.

i also went to jonnyappleseed. they are the best!

if you need help setting it up let me know. i ended up getting help from vando. so more than willing to pass on the tips.

cheers.

Most of the speedsailors at sandypoint use the Foretrex 201 (ie: there isn't a problem of using a rechargable battery - I've used mine for about a week before recharging it). You will however need to download your track data each day, so you might as well recharge it then.

You cant get a USB version of the Foretrex 101/201 -> they only come in a serial version. You can however get a serial-to-usb adaptor for about $30 at your local computer store, but you only need this if your computer doesn't have a serial port.

As mentioned, the foretrex doesn't support the downloading of maps, but you can download the days' runs for analysis at the end of the session - which is how you determine your peak and average speeds. [ There are also peak and average speed readouts on the screen, which allows you to see how you did for each run. ]

** Dont go sailing without using an aquapac...:
- the GPS will fall off; its mounting mechanism is not strong enough.
- get water into it; its meant to be waterproof, but the force of crashing enough to cause water ingress.

Hey Moz, gotta agree with the guys.
I bought a Foretrex 101 thru Ebay. Theres a guy selling from Brisvegas and its good service. I paid around $140 and it turned up 5 days later. Luck of the draw on cost as some go for over $200, depends on how many bidding i think.
I used mine the whole last summer without an Aquapac but must of been lucky. I did get an Aquapac and definitely worth the investment. I had a stack at high speed and the impact ripped the Aquapac completely off my arm. I surfaced and there it was floating next to me. If I hadnt of had the pac then bye bye GPS.
I keep a pack of AAA's in the glove box, you can even put a couple in the Aquapac if you are going out for a long time or distance.
They are great fun for comparing speed and what setup was fastest on the day.
Getone and you wont regret it for sure

Hi Jason I use the foretrex 101 with rechargeable AAA batteries.
I find I get about 5 normal days sailing out of them + I keep a backup set at well. The 101 is also about $40 cheaper then the 201.
Mathew I could not think of anything worse than rocking up to sandy point only to find I forgot to charge the 201.
Also Mat congrats on you PB's down there awesome. How do you like that new speed board of yours.

Vando,
I'm with you, I bought a 1 hour charger that you can also use in the the car, and I got some Eneloop rechargables that are a cross between nickel metal hydroxide and alkalines, they say that they will hold 80% of their charge over a year. You can by these from Dick Smith now, cheers

Get a Geckho 201

Every single Foretrex in the Race fleet here in NSW has been replaced at least once.

It's not just water ingress, there are problems with the buttons, and the download cradle contacts seem to wearout as well.

The geko 201 is very reliable. Mine has been dunked several times when the sandwich bags I used to use failed. It now fits in the smallest aquapack which keeps it dry. I think the foretrex is a bit wider and needs the larger aquapack. But display is small and hard to see if you need reading glasses.
