Strange question I know but does anyone know if you get a CDMA/ NextG mobile reception with external antenna up at Gnaraloo?

nope... CDMA is the "old" Hellstra regional network which was upgraded to HSDPA (which they call NextG).

I got "one bar" with a Telstra CDMA last year in certain places on a few hills. Just enough to send and receive the odd text.

If you haven't been, there are pay phones though at the camp.

I had an idea you could get NextG coverage at the homestead dependent on location. Saying that, the homestead is approx 20min drive from the sailing spot.

Leave the phone at home - you'll be too busy sailing to want to call anyone.

I doubt you'd get NextG anywhere near there. We can only get it within 20km of every country town I've bene in. Contrast, CDMA with external aerial gives me service all the way to Gero, all the way to Esperance, Kal etc.

if you don't get mobile coverage,

it may be possible if you really needed a phone while there to rent a handset from a 2-way radio communications company and use it to dial out.

that's if someone covers the area.

most self contained villas up there come complete with a pc. They are conviently positioned right next to the minibar and next to the balcony. A great vantage point watching the surfers and deciding whether its getting windy enough. For apres tombstones, why not head down to the sailors bar, and enjoy a well earned pint with your favorite steak from the all you can eat buffet.

don't knock the eastern suburbs... at least we get a decent amount of wind. When was the last time you sailed at Long Reef again?

ha ha... very funny. This was actually a serious question. I am one of a few people I know that have a job where you can drop everything at a moments notice and go sailing and still earn a very good living. The only drawback is I need to reachable by clients in case of an emergency and subsequently need net access to do my work.

Given the long reach I have seen with NextG in other parts of WA I was just curious.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback re mobile reception/ pay phones.

I have read somewhere that Telstra have to ensure that there is NextG access that matches the stated CDMA coverage areas before they switch off the CDMA network.

The problem with this is that people get CDMA coverage in areas that are in excess of where the stated coverage area is, and thus NextG coverage may not actually match where you can currently get CDMA coverage.

If you really want mobile coverage, rent a satellite phone. I think you can rent them from Optus. If you really want net access (assuming no NextG), the only way I can think of getting it is a two-way satellite service, which is neither cheap or easily transportable.

Hey King

Good luck with the self imposed exile
We see you have been back twice since vowing a 2 month layoff ?

Still with the summer pattern kicking in you'll be spending all your time on the water... lucky you !

Type your postcode into this. Should give you a rough guide.

when Telstra and the gov talk about coverage it is in the context of percentages of population covered. so if they are supposed to achieve say 96% coverage, guess where the majority of the population live --- in the towns and cities.

coverage with next G is no where up to what cdma was yet and apparently ( mate involved in the industry as a tech upgrading the exchanges in the bush ) still a fair way off matching cdma
