My limited knowledge is that most production boards JP's, F2's etc. are manufactured by a mob called COBRA, not sure if they are the same.

I thought all major brand production boards are manufactured by Cobra:

JP
F2
Tabou
Fanatic
Exocet
Starboard
Hi Fly
RRD

Not sure, but I think you could safely add:

Goya
Naish
Quatro
Angulo

What about brands that are not made by Cobra (excluding the juniors like Carbon Art and Kinetic/Delta):

AHD (are they still made?)
Thommen (I thoght these were nmade by AHD?)

Found the business Cobra in the Phuket business directory... Couldn't see a list of products made though...

YEP, can confirm that Quatro production boards are made at the Cobra factory in Thailand. Keith Taboul (shaper/director of Quatro Int) confirmed this in a recent mag article. As Goya have the same finish as Quatro and are marketed and promoted by the same Hawaiian distribution chain and shop (fwd Hawaii.....under direction of Lalo Goya and MFC + others), I would take an educated guess and say that their production boards are done by Cobra too. However, all custom Goya and Quatro boards are custom done in Hawaii.

The new 07 quatro/goya boards have a rougher look then the shmick polish you would normally expect from a Cobra product. The boards have been have been dry sanded and you can see some Carbon through the finish coat if you look hard enough. This according to Alberto at Windshack, was to give them a custom made look to separate them from other production boards in the market space.

Article was in Windsurf (UK), Nov/Dec 2006 issue

Not sure if the Thailand Cobra factory made thos eearly boards, but now I don't think it's a "brand" at all.
I think all the boards made there are for other "brands", (they are it's customers,) to their design specs (materials shape etc).
It's possible it does own 1 or more of the brands it produces, I'm not sure.

From what I can remember AHD and Thommen are made in a specialised factory in Tunisia. Not sure what other brands are made there but most others are made by the Cobra factory.

I was under the impression Starboard did their own.
Also F2 have presented marketing material claiming they built their own.

from my limited experience the give away is a fairly long serial No. right in front of the mast box. usually starting with a letter.
the font used is always the same for all Cobra Boards.

They do build most but build to individual customer specs. So one brand trying to cut costs can use a cheaper layup etc.

I believe Starboard keeps very close contact with Cobra, I think it was Patrice/exocet also moved to thailand to do similar. Coincidence that these are two of the better constructed of the big brands???

F2 probably make some of their limited boards outside of cobra- window boards etc.

Yes all the layup's are individual to the companies, probably the same for alot of boards though.

You'd have to question pricing, how come the KIWI Carbon Art boards price are considerably better priced than gear ex Cobra factory. check the web page and the price is all there. And the Kiwi's don't have the advantage of cheap labour like Cobra so what's the differance?www.carbonart.co.nz/about.html

Are Carbon Art cheap junk or are they a good thing?
Cant see Chris Lockwood playing on junk, so that probably answers that question re the board quality.
Is it factory direct that does it?, maybe--- they don't have the infrastructure cost that a general sports outlet has, but labour cost compared Cobra Thailand V NZ Carbon Art are much higher in NZ.

Anybody using them besides Chris, and what are they like? And how popular are they in NZ

Bic have always utilised an aggressive pricing structure. Years ago their Vivace full carbon boards were about half the price of say an f2 thommen and were excellent boards (apart from trimbox on earlier ones). I guess their pricing came from volume of sales and construction methods which required little actual manpower (apart from the full carbon ones).

Now they have gone in their own direction and more or less shunned the pwa- their board construction is pretty much equivalent to the lower priced boards in cobra constructed boards and pricing is not all that much different.

Carbon art are a little more expensive than most of the Cobra boards. They have alot of experience and good designs behind them so are very valid (if offered i'd ride carbon art in an instant). They are also making full profit over cost of a Cobra board so they are easily covering extra manufacturing costs.

Question why something like a AB+ (chinese made) or T1 costs almost $1000 more than a cobra board.
