Hi all,

Maybe someone can help me ... I own a Gaastra Nitro 4 6.3 sqm 2003 which is normally perfectly fine.

I had not use the sail for more than 8 months (due to winter) and when it tried to rig it up again yesterday, for some reason the top two cams kept on popping out while trying to insert the mast. I spent 45 minutes pulling the mast out and back in with the same result, don't know what I'm doing wrong compared with 8 months ago, any tip on how to avoid this?

The good side of it that while I was losing time on the beach, the wind went up to more than 25 knots so I just rigged up my favorite 5.5, the 6.3 would have been a bit of a struggle anyway :-)

Thanks

o-oh!

I had a couple of Nitro 3's and the same problem. As one of my sails aged, the luff material stretched a little and cams popping off became &^%&*$% - slightly narrower diameter mast might of also been part of the problem!

I solved my problem by VERY gently downhauling a little, then re-positioning cam and then downhauling a little more and so on. The other thing I used to do was have someone hold cam in place while I pulled on the downhaul. Not always an option.

The best solution I saw was someone using a small section of PVC pipe on each problem cam. Get yourself some PVC pipe about 1.5-2 x mast diameter. Cut pipe into 10 cm long sections. Then cut pipe along the length on one side so it can be opened and use as a clamp. Before downhauling, place the clamp (pipe) over each cam to hold it on the mast

there are Cam spacers available for the sail that go between the cam and the end of the battern pocket design to take out the problems of different mast diam or luff pocket stretch.

If you contact me [email protected] I'll send you a couple in the post

What a top idea! If we had the "hand clap" smilie I'd use it now

Just a question for annonierj,
If the cams are popping off when rigging, then surely you can pop them back on again once the downhaul is set? Remember to bend the battens a lot when doing this, ie if the cam is below the mast then push down hard on the bit where the cam joins the batten, then push up on the cam and it should pop on again.

Or didn't this work?

Hey Nebbian,

Yeah I tried that, but didn't work, the fact that the luff pocket doesn't have any opening to access the cam results in next to no grip or leverage to be able to do this.

David, I'll send you an email about the cam spacer, although I can't really visualise how this works, and how do I access the cam if there's no opening as per above?

Annonierj, I have a 10 m sail fitted with cams, Have only rigged this once. So I am talking from a novice point of view.

I used (on the advise of the chap I scored this sail from) the large spring loaded plastic clamps used for wood working, clamped over the cam with enough room for the mast to slide into.
The clamp spring pressure wont let the cam jump off the mast, simular principle as the PVC pipe, but way stronger.
Fit the boom, bit of outhaul, and down haul and no issues.

Hope this helps.

Excellent idea!! I'll go to Bunnings and buy one, maybe two as the problems tends to happen to the top two cams.

Now, you really have a TEN sq m?? This is gigantic!!!

Thanks again for the tip.

Yep its a 10m, dont know how to use the bloody thing, scorted it for 1/2 dozen neck oils

Will find a flat day soon to give it a run. Be a prick to uphaul I reckon

Not into waves, more into flat water blasting. (not that good at that either, still learning)
Just got home from session on Swan river, gusty as all hell. 10kn--15kn--8kn--6kn--15kn, all in the same run...Pain in the arse,

It worked like a charm! Thanks Mineral, that will save me a lot of frustration on the beach .

Here's the 2" clamp I've bought from Bunnings for 8$ each:

Now I like my sail again

that sounds like an awsome idea.

I had problems with my old 5.0 gaastra which was realy old. We bought another sail with cams and it worked fine, so we just assumed that the old 5.0 was an early cam sail and not as perfected yet.

We just use to persist and because my bro, dad and i, all sail together we could have two people holding 2 of the 3 or 4 cams. Still had a bit of trouble though.

anyway thats a great thing to know cheers
