Hi, just upgraded from a 130L old explosion to a carve 99 and found it really difficult to hold the board on the water. Granted at the time the wind picked up to 30+ knots, but I felt as tho I was riding a bucking horse! I was using a 4.5 ezzy and the standard 28cm fin in quite choppy conditions. any advice?

thanks,

Jans.

Hi

I had a 99, thought it was a great board. Any 99L board in 4.5m weather will be pretty bouncy, just because the water is so bouncy. This probably feels a lot worse cos youve just changed down board size too. A board of this size wont be balanced with the smaller sails - yes you can put them on, but its not ideal. Same with a maximum size too. For me, I found the 99 was best with 5-6m2, I have a smaller baord for when its windier, and a kite when its less.

I think is feels like this because the board will be a lot lighter and stiffer than your old board. I found this when I upgraded from a HiFly 275 to a Starboard FreeSEX. The starboard seems to skip along and become airborne a lot easier compared to the Hifly which would flex and stick to the water a lot more. You just get used to it and learn how to absorb shock more to keep the board on the water. Also, the conditions you were in would make it harder still to keep the board down, just have to bend ze kneez.

I have used an older carve 99 with a 4.5m and it wasn't bad for a board that size. Try adjusting you masttrack a little further forward, also a smaller fin ay help.

I think the new shapes/ board styles are more wind specific... correct me iff I am wrong... But I used an old screamer and could is it in pretty much all winds... till I broke it... Then I bought a mistral syncro same litreage.... Its easier to sail, jumps higher... is possibly faster, turns better... but when it gets windy it bounces around more... I just have to adjust my style of riding

Several issues here.

First is board is probably much lighter than your old one, making it feel jumpier underfoot. I really noticed this getting off an old Bombora (15kg) onto a new board (7kg). The Bomby was like a torpedo through the chop - the new board wanted to leap over every little ramp. Eventually you will grow to love this new feeling.

Two such a small sail will not have sufficient mastfoot pressure to pin the board down. I weight 105kg and don't feel comfortable on a 98lt board with a 5.0 sail, so a 4.5 with a lighter rider would feel even scarier. I find a 5.4 borderline comfortable, a 5.8 feels perfect and a 6.2 very good on my 98.

Three push base to front of track to try and hold nose down.

Four, get a smaller fin because it's possible in such strong wind you may have had too much lift from a 28, which could lift the whole tail out of the water. With less lift, the tail sits deeper, aiding control.

You may wish to consider buying an old wave board with about the same volume as your body weight for these wind strengths and such small sails - they are usually pretty cheap and you will have all the control you would wish for. Maybe an old plastic Tiga which are cheap as chips, are indestructable, and heavy enough to slice through choppy conditions ?

Ya gotta love the C99. Looks like you could use a bigger sail like 5.5 or 5.9. A 5.9 works nicely though in 30+ knots I would probably use a 55cm wide board like sonic slalom board.
Get a decent fin - B4 leading edge is good 28 or 30cm.
I find moving the base to the very back of the track and straps right back and out is sweet.
cheers
