Laying in bed last night then had an idea for a comp. Basicaly its a team event. So you would have like 3 sailors per team then in the heats you would have team A vs team B. So your team has a one sailor out on the water at the time and you can come and change when ever you like, or you could have both teams having 6 sailors on the water at the same time but this could make judging a bit harder. This way its more like freesailing where try to go big but if you wipeout etc it doesn't matter as much as you have 2 other team mates to pull you out of the s#^t. Coz with normal comps people are conservative in that they need say 3 jumps and 3 waves then they will try to pull big moves off, as they dont want to be swimming after 1 jump and loose 5 mins of a 15 minute heat. And as people are going big it would be good to watch. As there are more people on the water at one time there wouldn't be as much waiting around on the beach when the conditions are cranking. It would also be quicker to run as if there are 30people thats 10 teams, and if each heat went for 20 minutes thats only 200 minutes which is just over 3 hours for a single elimination, which could be easly done in an arvo.
If it got big enough you could even have like a youth, an ameture and a master in each team so it gets everyone involved.
I know comps aren't everyones cup of tea and you will always get that but i think this could help to get more people into them as it would be heaps of fun.
Just though id put it on seabreeze land and see what people think while not a lot of sailing is getting done

Stef was telling me about this idea today, so i had a think about it as well. I've seen a similar thing done in surfing where the team has maybe a combined time of 30 mins, and each member gets scored on a certain number of waves. The team could only have one person out at a time and once this person came in they couldn't go back out so good tactics were needed on deciding whether to use up the teams time waiting for a better scoring wave.

Anyway i think something along the lines of what stefan has suggested would be a great idea. Given that windjam didn't happen last year, maybe this could replace it as a fun event. I rekon it would be great to have the chance to either sail as a team with your mates, or as a mixed team with one elite division standard sailor, an open division and either a junior/novice/grandmaster. As with nearly all wave comps, getting the numbers is a big issue, perhaps something like this would encourage the regular sailors to bring along a couple of their friends?

They would have to audition for the role, can't have anyone to tallented, although they have to be able to stack it stylishly

Cool!
You've got a wingman Leski! And I recon my famous "no-hands-no-feet-just--forwards" should be given double score too!

When and where?!!

Another idea for a fun comp is to have a no organization one. You get notified of a location through the week of the weekend comp. When you get there you buy an envelope with 4 cards in it for 10 bucks. One has the location of the party that night. Two cards have different tricks. eg. Backloop and duck gybe. And the last is marked Stack/attempt.
A video camera is set up on a tripod for 40 minutes on a set piece of water then turned off. Any action in front of the camera is captured then everyone freesails.
At the party location on the big screen the action is played back and the now well lubricated sailors vote on their cards for the best of each manouver, survivor style. the votes are tallied and each winner recieves prizemoney. 30 sailors x $10 = $300 prizemoney.
COOL!!!!
