Haven't actually sailed in coral bay, but was there about 6 weeks ago.

Spoke to the local CALM officer, and they dont really like you to sail in Bills Bay (the real name of the main Coral Bay)
but if you go around to the next bay where the boat ramp is there is some fantastic flat water sailing to be had there.
also if you head to the north end of the main bay, its pretty much the same.

Just look out for the stingrays, they are bloody enormous

I spend some time in Coral Bay earlier this year. No one said anything to me about a speed limit or people not liking people to sail there...

... however, while there I went for a sail just of the point near the pub (where the tourist boat come to shore). It's all flat water sailing and you will need to seriously look out for the reef on a low tide. Personally I probably wouldn't venture out to where the main reef is. To strong a current and too many big fish in the water.

All that said, you will find really nice open bays just south and north of Coral Bay. I had a long chat with one of the skippers at to where the best places are to wavesail/ windsurf and according to him there are a few people kiting on the southern end of Coral bay (not sure if this is the boat ramp gumbs is referring to).

Either way, I don't think Coral Bay is that great for windsurfing. Take your gear and expect nothing. If there is wind and you have time do a bit of exploring and you might find you end up having a great sail.

The fact that most dive operators leave early in the morning before it gets to rough usually is a good indication.

hey fraggle... as far as I am concerned I don't think Gnarloo is not that gnarly (sorry for the bad pun).

Sure it get's pretty rad once the waves go over mast high but for most parts is a fairly gentle wave. The trickiest bit about this wave is getting in and out of the water.

I am actually more scared sailing Shoalhaven heads (south of Sydney) on a big swell and strong current than Gnaraloo. Gnaraloo seems a little bit more predictable and there doesn't seem to be a lot of water behind the waves.

A tip on the side... make sure you take one of those fly nets that goes over your head. Regular Gnaraloo visitors will know what I am talking about.

Every time I have been there I have always looked at South passage while heading out and thought it would be sick to sail it? But you would need a boat I reckon. Or only sail when the tide is coming in. But yeh it would be mad when the swell is up I reckon.
