Hey, I am leaving for coral bay on Sat for 2 weeks. Is it worth bringing my windsurf kit, and if so wat should I bring. We got 2 boats, so can go pretty much anywhere. Been looking at the graphs for gnaraloo, and there hasnt been much happening wind wise.

i have sailed there in july about 10years ago, we had westerlys for a couple of days and it also rained so i think it was unusual weather for this time of year. we just sailed inside on the bay but you have to be very, very careful!! of the coral lumps which you really cant see until you are right on top of them! these are perfect for quickly and efficiently removing your fin(if you hit one at speed try not to catapult on to one as well).
i recall having to sail some guys finless screamer half a k' back to shore slip sliding all the way!!

don't forget to ask at the dive shop if the reef sharks are still making their nightly visits a short walk nth of town (you can see beach from th shops.

It's well worth it having about 20 sharks swiming around and comming close to shore in about knee deep water.

It's perfect for the evenings when there is no wind.

Recommend doing the Quad bike tour from the mob at the shops as well (they are better organised).

The chunky style pizza from the restraunt is evil as well

Have fun

I sailed there about 15 years ago, I just sailed straight out to the reef. When I came in some guys that were out there catching sharks reckon they saw heaps of 18' sharks out there. Lucky I didn't see em!

I looked at the wind speeds for cararvon and the have only had 1 day in the last month with wind 20+ km/hr, so I rekon I will pass on bring my kit, it takes up so much space for something I might not use, we got a wakeboard, so will go tralling for sharks instead me thinks.

Done a bit of sailing in and around 200kms both sides of Coral Bay. I recommend you leave your gear at home and what room you have left in the car fill with beer (it will save you a heap of cash, rather than paying the big bucks for their stuff). Winds up that way dont start till at least September and then its best to go north to Exmouth or South to Warra.

Enjoy your trip FA

Only ever done it in a 4wd. Yet like most well worn tracks it should be do-able with the 2wd (mind you I havent been that way in a few years, will be going back this October). As the season warms up there is usually a few people heading that way so you should be alright. Just let someone know where you are off too and stock the esky to the brim.

If that fails, travel the extra few km's to Exmouth, you wont be disappointed. Plenty of wind, lots of places to sail...

Saw 5 different types of sharks yesterday... a couple of my mates had just got out of the water way north of CB outside the reef, spear fishing, and i hooked a ramora, following it in was a 3m Tiger shark... hehe, then my mate hooked a grey nurse on a hand line, and about 5 min later we had about 5 sharks swimming under the boat... reefies we think.... We then went for a free dive in abotu 8 m of water outside the reef, near north passage, and shot some trevally, some little black tip reef sharks came in, followed by a 2.5 m hammerhead shark, which I was stoked to see in the water, later we found out our mates were bleeding the fish they just shot over the side of the boat about 20m away... about 3 min after we got in the boat hooked another shark on a handline... which broke 4 100 lb wire tracers and got away... all in all a good day. Caught perhaps the biggest fish u could catch with a gidgey.... any ways im off... 5 days to go... more fish to catch...

ps, this place is the best
