Work mates brother heads up North backpacking with friends.
Involved in a pub brawl and get stitches to his elbow.
Cops tell him to get out of town, so he heads to Exmouth.

Arrives and decides that the wound needs a bit of a clean out so he has a few good dips up at Cape Range National Park.
2 days later arm not feeling too good, goes swimming again.
4 days later feeling rather ill, his co travellers convince him to see a doctor.

Coral is growing on his bone !
Another 2 days and he would of lost his arm.

Sugery and hospital follow.

So remember North of Shark Bay even the smallest wound can turn nasty .

I got a nasty coral infection once in Fiji. Thought it was just a minor thing and kept on sailing for a few days. I had a big night on the kava at about the same time the infection started to go septic. I spent a wild night having cold sweats and hallucinations. The next day I went to see the Indian doctor in Nadi, he cleaned the wounds out with no mercy. That meant pulling the scabs off with pliers, squeezing the pus out and scrubbing with a brush. He pumped me full of antibiotics and instructions to stay out of the water for two weeks.

Since then I take more care with coral cuts.
Scubbing them out with fresh lemon juice works a treat.
Anyone else got good first aid tips for coral cuts?

I found this info before my trip.

http://www.indosurf.com.au/surf_shop/natural_footers_first_aid.php

As it says
"The Famous "Chinese Red Ointment" Thie Ta Yao Gin
Cleans, sterilizes and seals coral cuts to help you KEEP SURFING."
This ointment is magic stuff the key ingredient in the kit - you can buy it seperately (like i did) from any chinese herbal shop about $3 a little bottle - just go to your nearest china town - I found it in Eastwood -Sydney.

had the tinest of tiny niks in my ankle from mettams pool, 48 hrs later i couldn't walk, agonising pain,swelling,madness...sweating etc...doc gave me the stongest antibiotics he had and said if it didn't clear up i could be f%%k'd up and on medicine for the rest of my life!!!!!!

doesn't have to be up north.

GO TO THE CHEMIST, buy some AQUAEAR and a TOOTHBRUSH, keep it in your car.

AS SOON AS you get a cut, scrub wound out with aquaear and brush. The slight stinging pain will be a "stroll through heaven with the angels" compared to the hell of coral cut pain.
