Thanks to Zoran for pointing it out. Have you guys seen the new Aerotech Phantoms with the cuben fibre material instead of monofilm? If you've ever been daring enough to read the kitesurf forums around the world, you'd have probably read that cuben fibre was used in one of the popular new model kites which didn't last too well, and many were recalled. Hopefully it might work out better for windsurfing sails. Apparently they have an equal low end power to an equivalent sized mono sail, but weight 1/4 lighter, and nicer to handle. Looks like it may be another durable alternative like the newer version of dacron which is being used by Hot Sails Maui. Either way, i say p!ss off the mono, bring back the dacro (or cuben)
anyway, have a read and a sticky

I'd never heard of it before, so did some research, and came across this:
quote:
CF sails are much lighter and have many times the life and
the damage tolerance of the best, similarly performing substitutes.
CF is much thinner than other laminates and retains strength during
repeated flexing. Competing Aramid and Carbon laminates lose
nearly 80% of their strength after being folded 250 times, while CF
retains nearly 100% of its original properties.

Wow!

Still, some people aren't all that happy with it:

If everyone goes to cuben fibre then can I start using my old dacron sails?

The cuben phantoms are pretty expensive, but from all reports they are fantastic to use... I would never consider a freestyle/wave sail above 6.4 but these may change that. Yes it was a failure in kites but was suited to what it was applied to. Sail requirements are a little different, and should last ok since it was developed for the AC boats in the first place (although the sails might have limited use I cant see them using materials that are at risk of blowout). Time will tell how it lasts the rinse cycle in the surf.

its still being used in the kites. The problem was with the seams not the material itself and the fact that it is hard to repair.

the stuff makes wikid ass kites!
