Has anyone cut down a carbon mast?
I have a lovely new 430 carbon mast just sitting there that i never use, due the the price of a new one i wanted to take 30cm off it.
where is the best spot to take off the extra 30cm
Any help would be great Cheers

From the middle of the bottom half Just jokes

Seen a few people cut the bottom off the bottom section. One thing to be careful about, if your mast tapers quickly, cutting the lower 30cm off, may mean mast extension can't go in, can't go in far enough.

Is it essential surgery or elective

From: www.peterman.dk/windsurf-mast-article-gb01.htm

If you shorten the mast (from the bottom!), it gets softer and doesn't change its bend curve. Of course it's not wise to cut off so much that the mast foot/extension doesn't fit the mast - or that the boom is fixed above the extra strong boom area. And as indicated - never shorten the mast from the top.

ive chopped a new x6 460 down to 450, 50mm off top and bottom, then cut an old 20% c/fibre 460 down to 430, 50mm off top 250mm off bottom and full np mast base/extension still fits in fine, just check your diameter as to whether it reduces or not.

I used a drop saw with a finer tooth wood blade, cut it fine

Just a few points.
Already mentioned is reducing dia of bottom re mast extension.

There's also the boom reinforcing area. If you drop that down too much by cutting the bottom off the boom wont be in it's reinforced zone.

Cutting off the top makes a stiffer mast, cutting off the bottom a softer mast.
Cutting both makes the most sense especially if you want 300mm

customise it to the exact length of your smallest sail without an adjustable turban.
try to cut equal amounts off top and bottom if over 10cm otherwise cut it off the top.
just my opinion, i dont want to debate IMCS ethics.

If it's new trade it on a 400 - save the hassle.

Big Al is right. I cut one from 430 to 400 and it is way too stiff. Makes a noticable difference to a proper 400. Even if it costs you a few bucks I would recomend trading it.

Sell it on SEABREEZE (poputar size) and put the bucks towards the 400........ you will be happier in the long run.

I was looking for a 430. What do you want for it? Thought of cutting my 460 down to 444 for a new sail then I remembered one of the probs with old one was that as I was not one of those big pro slalom guys ( you know the type the sails are designed around) even with the recommended 460 there was no gust response.
I am with Hoop on this one. I am sure it will be way too stiff.

I guess its the same theory as cutting a spring, ie lowering a car by chopping springs, it makes it stiffer as you shorten the coil length.

I only shortened mine down for a high wind wave sail, where high performance wasnt really a factor.

back in the day I cut the tip of a mast off. I think it worked ok. well, it didn't break anyway.
