To those that know what are your thoughts. i have just got a 5.2m tushy X-15 speed sail. I have the 6.4m and the 7.7m also and they rig ona 460.

The 5.2m has a luff length of 412.

My question is, i have a 430 north sting that i use with my wave sails (north voodoo sizes 4.7,5.3 and 5.7m).

i am considering cutting it down to 415 by cutting 75mm off each end of the top section as this will still enable the join to fit snug.
i have looked at cutting the base but it is a drop shape and with a 450mm extension it could cause troubles.

I am thinking that this could work as it will fit my wave sails still and fit my new 5.2m.

What are the thoughts of the wiser ones out there.

Not sure I qualify for "wiser" but I'll have a go.

There's a danger you'll change the mast curve and stiffness. cutting the tip off a mast effectively makes it stiffer, but cutting the bottom of the top section should make that softer.
You also may cut off the area reinforced for the join, making it weaker.
In other words I wouldn't recommend it, unless somebody else has done it to a similar mast with no ill effects.

Don't Do it... I'mrobably not one of the wiser ones you are reffering to but the chance of you splitting the mast, making a crack or two while cutting if quite high. If you are then going to use that mast in waves the last thing you need is a weakend mast. But I am no pro so don't rely on my comment. Also if you ever want to sell the mast for whatever reason, I wouldn't buy a home cut mast.

It can be done. If you are a 100% total expert and know the brand, bend curve, reflex response of the mast, and all the characteristics of the way the sail is cut and what brand / type of mast it is cut on.

Thus, yes it can be done but dont't .... no insult but there isn't many people who should consider cutting a mast down.

More pertinent may be: a 430 designed for North wave sails will never be ideal for a Tush speed sail. To make the most of a speed sail we're talking a 75% carbon minimum for reflex response alone. Further it is probably cut for a SDM and the North drop shape is a semi RDM (??).
Email Tush and ask but I'd suspect any North drop shape, even of correct length and IMCS, would not work well.

ive cut a few with no problems, taken equal amount off top and bottom.

Im not that hung up on the change in the mast's performance, if its windy the thing still works fine.

But, if you can trade it in, might give you more peace of mind.

Thanks for the input guys. I have found out that the tushy sail just neeeds a consant curve SDM mast so i am undecided.

I have an old one peice 470 i dont use any more so i might try cutting that down and see what happens.

Looks like i'm on the hunt for a 400 mast. It never ends does it. there is always something else you need to get.

Thanks again

search the forums(in the last year) for somthing like: "mast bend character". Should keep you entertained for a while

BTW, constant curve does not always equal constant curve (i.e. two constant curve masts don't necessarily have the same curve character)...

Thanks for all the links. My evil twin mind has been telling me to "cut it down, it will work" and my sensible half has been saying "dont do it". I think sense has prevailed and i will look at getting a 400 mast. Thanks for the help guys.

only cut it off the bottom, where the base goes in, just make sure your extension will fit in once you've cut it, and as everyone said be very carefull not to split it.. don't trim the top half of the mast at all, done a few over the years works fine....
