I can't believe the polies don't want daylight savings. You would have to have rocks in your head not to want extra daylight in summer. I cannot think of 1 single reason why they shouldn't introduce it. Why don't they then??? Does anyone know the reasons why?

Please don't say the curtains will fade or the cows one, I have heard them before.

Something about farmers having to get up early, could be cows?

it's cos WA's too conservative to change anything.

referendum = no (no matter what the subject is)

Having lived in far North Queensland I can understand why that state doesn't have daylight savings. It's so damn hot all the time, the sooner you get some relief from sun the better. At sunset the temp would drop oh about 3 degrees. Not much but all we had to look forward to.
As W.A. is soooo big and most of it's up north maybe the reasoning is the same. Although I'm with you, an extra hour in the water would be a bonus.

Simon.

When I moved to Queensland I was astounded they did not have daylight savings since they pride themselves on outdoors/relaxed lifestyle. But there seems to be a lot of people here who despise daylight savings. Particularly outside the SE corner of the state. In the north they claim they'd be going to work in the dark and people out west claim they'd be baking on the hot sun till almost midnight. Looking at www.ga.gov.au/geodesy/astro/sunrise.jsp it's not true; the extremes with daylight savings are roughly

latest sunrise = 7:40 am at Burketown (NW corner) at end March
latest sunset = 8:40 pm at Birdsville (SW corner) mid January

Which is roughly the same as Melbourne, so the government's argument that the state is too vast to accommodate it seems ridiculous.

To me it seems to be a country versus city folk thing.

How I miss sailing after work in summer.

As for being too far north wouldn't the beginning of the day be cooler than the end? In other words wouldn't it be better to get up sooner go to work sooner and knock of an hour sooner, so you can relax, have a swim or beer or windsurf at the hot end of the day? Not having lived there maybe I'm missing something.

I've traditionally always been against it for the reasons Ren said: too hot in the early to mid evening if you live in the midle of nowhere. There are places in WA that would still be 40deg at 8:00pm.
For those who have kids who have to go to bed then, and they live in the bush, and also have not the money for aircon ect it makes an enormous difference. Or think of the baker / delivery dude who starts at 0500 so goes to bed at 8:00pm and get up at 0400.

In short I've always disliked the idea as it suits the average city dwelling 9 - 5 worker who likes to have a run down the "right" beachfront after work in their latest $400 shoes so the right people see them there.

After stating that opinion last summer my friends looked at me and said "but you windsurf.... don't you realise you'd have an extra hour in seabreeze , sailing after work....?
CONVERTED!!!! Bring on Daylight Saving

Living right on the border between NSW and QLD this sucks big time. You have no idea how confusing it is, not only do you have to figure out if the venue is on NSW or QLD time, you also have to figure out if the person you're meeting has taken it into account.

It inevitably leads to the pitiful excuse of "Sorry mate, missed you by an hour"

In any case its not the pollies that don't want it, its the voting public. I could take it or leave it, there is already enough daylight in the afternoon without sacrificing the morning daylight. As it is I could get a surf in before work and a sail after work if I was keen enough.

I lived in Colorado for a few years and loved the daylight savings time so I sent an email to the then preimer of WA (Geoff Gallop) asking if he was considering daylight savings in WA. I got a polite reply saying he was looking into it. Just before the last election I asked again and this time the reply basically said the WA people dont want daylight saving time as per the last referendum (which was in 1990, before I could vote!!!)

I think it is time the issue was revisited seriously. While where at it why dont we increase the shopping hours too (my other pet hate)

Cheers

Why don't we actually bandy together & put some heat on the state govt by way of an email campaign. Not a SPAM style assault but more of a collective interest in the topic approach. Who's up for it....?

Sorry to spoil a good theory Big Dog. Eucla is on SA time, it is 45min ahead of the rest of the state. The sunrise/set time is thus 17min different in real time, not 62min.

I don't think it has anything to do with the width of the state.

Thanks for the link Hellemam. Once you vote you are shown the results. Currently, 89% say they want DLS.
I don't understand. Everyone wants it but we just can't have it.

Someone in Govt must be reading our forum. I heard on the news this morning one of the independants was going to put a bill today. If it gets accepted we could have DLS in WA by December this year.

I here we 'hopefully' having a 3 year trial...

Major reason I rekon is the time change in 'bad for business' limits the trading hours between WA and eastern states in summer to 4 hours... Bad Bad, very Bad...

Check this http://www.daylightsavingparty.org.au/index.htm

There some stuff in there that rekons daylight savings reduces the road toll... cool eh.

Should tell the government if they are serious about reducing deaths on our roads they should get rid of speed cameras and bring on daylight saving... That way I can speed to the beach and not get caught

The last couple of times they have tried it I was living in the hills and was not into water sports (had a small property). Daylight saving was a complete pain, as I could not do anything around the place before going to work, and then comming home early I had to sit around for a couple of hours waiting for it to cool down to do some work.

Now of course everything is different. I would love some time after work to go windsurfing.

So it really boils down to lifestyle and it does not suit everyone.

My understanding is that the rural vote equals 2 urban votes thus it never go through in a referendem. That has since changed. The pollies will vote it through. They have private business interests so it is to there own interest.

Bring it on.
